You still vote for your local MP in a general election.
You could vote for an independent candidate if you wanted to, basically you're not voting for a party.

    But nearly everybody is.

Well, my current local MP will not be getting my vote again :nonofinger:, as much use as a "chocolate fire guard" and that's being polite.:heehee:

Okay. Over here it is different. Party members like myself get to vote as to who would be the best leader of the party. And the majority wins.

The general election is held to determine which party comes into power. And usually (I would hope) the general public vote for the party that most aligns with their views/goals.

Yes, over here the leader can change but normally it is someone who follows "the party line" and does not change the overall course of the party's aims.

Seems what you're saying is this new leader is not even going to follow the party's course. That is a dirty betrayal to the people who voted the party in, in the first place!

That's more or less what happens here. The thing is that there is a broad outline of a party line with a number of various options that would fit into that line. The party leader (prime minister) and her cohorts (cabinet) decide how they think is the best way to follow the line.

Although I don't like the new PM (actually think she's a robot :heehee:) she hasn't, yet, had enough time to make a mess of things. I await with bated breathe.

Off topic- in Finland we take the term "Party Leader" slightly differently.

              This won't go down well.
But, it's a good job that energy price rises were discussed yesterday because I doubt anything meaningful is going to be sorted out in the near future.
And then we have the massive cost of the funeral to pay for and then after that the coronation.

Liz Truss got her timing right, the media are having a field day and are completely distracted from what's important.

The media are as usual going OTT.

Half the time they can't think of anything to prattle on about, but instead of going back to something similar to the usual programs they keep repeating everything.

Ok so the Queen has died, very sad but 96yr olds often do.
She did well to reach that grand old age.

Parliament is always adjourned during the mourning period, which is usually ten days. :noidea:

I'm not going into work for those ten days as well. Oh, I forgot! I haven't been into work for 22 years  :old:

My GP's practice are encouraging patients to fill in an online form rather than ring the surgery, they then try and respond within two days. They have used a different system to most surgeries and at weekends you cannot fill the form out, you are advised to ring 111 or 999 if urgent help is required.

Ours have a similar system but you can only access the form during office hours!

I suspect mine will be the same.
Wonderful I can either take time off work to fill out the form, or fill it in at work. The one thing I can't do is fill it in when I have access to all the information and time to do it properly.

Same here. When the online system gets switched off at 5pm they put up a message saying to ring the surgery. When we ring the number there is a recorded message telling us to go online! I've said before here the only way to get an appointment is to visit the surgery, which won't let you in, the door is locked. If we tap on the office window they open that an inch and can then make a booking, it's a complete joke and has been since covid.
