My son, living in America, has been surprised by his workmates offering condolences to him. He also said that people whilst out and about shopping, having picked up on his English accent, have said "I'm sorry for your loss".

That's lovely. That folks for whom the queen was someone else's figurehead recognise how important she was in ordinary people's lives.

Yesterday and today I've had reason to head into town. Not drinking, but in the proximity of the pubs. I was shocked by how many people were out. I go into town every week. Friday is our training day, the hall is over the road from the pub, and Saturdays we tend to wander round the shops. It's normally quiet. Yesterday and today it was crazy out. My cynical but probably correct missus says they're just using it as an excuse to go out and get drunk, and she's probably right, but the fact remains the queen's passing has clearly influenced a lot of people to go out and mark the occasion in their own way.

There are still many people that care wherever they are in the world Clueless. On the other hand there are some that are responding to the queen's passing by saying and doing shameful things. There's been an incident here in a nearby village and the police had to be called. Some have no respect at all! And out of respect I won't spoil this thread by repeating it.

Yes I've seen some posts on social media where people are using it as an opportunity to push their political agenda. It's sad. Regardless of personal stance, there's a time and a place and a way to voice an opinion. I think the best way to deal with such things is to simply ignore it. People who say and do such things are expecting attention. I won't give them that.

As far as I'm concerned, whether an individual is a royalist or not is irrelevant. The fact is the queen was a devoted public servant that exuded dignity, respect, compassion and all the values I hold dear, and from what I could tell, she was also lovely, with a beautiful soul. That goes regardless of title or rank. She was an asset to the nation just for who she was as a beautiful human being.

We went to a horticultural show yesterday (Mrs S had entered a lot of the sections) and when they were making their announcements before awarding the prizes they said that their committee had met to decide whether to cancel the show. They decided to continue. I think the Queen would have been horrified to hear things had been cancelled because of her - especially a horticultural show as she loved her plants.

On some of the news report they play a certain soothing tune ... and I cannot remember what it is but very beautiful.

Tesco was mental when we popped in there yesterday afternoon - to almost Christmas levels.. I wondered if folks were stocking up this weekend so they can stay home next weekend to watch proceedings?

Agree, going by FB there are many people posting, "whoopee" an extra day's holiday. In contrast to Thailand and the passing of the King, alcohol sales were banned as they are on numerous religious days, you would get some evil looks if you were seen drinking alcohol while they were mourning the Kings death.

You have to remember, for a lot of people it is just another old lady who has died and as such it doesn't affect them.

The biggest problem with being retired is you don't get to take advantage of bank holidays.

Did anyone spot Charlie getting a bit rattled with the ink wells while doing the signing ceremony yesterday .

You would have thought they could have found a bigger table.

And many do see the change of the era, the end of something from their life so far, as something monumental but express the feeling in a different way.

Any child growing up in this country has a collection of memories relating to the Queen. Whereas in some circles it is expected and acceptable to show, or at least acknowledge, personal grief, it may not be in all.

I believe that many who shout loud whoop whoops for the day off in public may have quiet thoughts in their heads when in private.

Whilst many will have their own private thoughts, sadly, these events have brought some real nasty pieces of work to the surface, one of the worst being the chip shop owner in Muir of Ord.

I wish I could have been flown by the RAF to see my Mum on her deathbed. All this media kerfuffle leaves me cold and if anything I see it as a bit morbid flocking to see a coffin. Not expecting to get any likes.
