Woke up on Thursday morning to the sound of rain falling into puddles,..it was only when Foxy Molly jumped off the bed to investigate that i followed,..,..not rain,..it was my 90 cm long fish tank,..it had sprung a leak,..stood for a few seconds to think,..unplugged the heater and pump,..grabbed as many towels as i could,..well all 11 of them,..then started to try beat the flood of almost 23 gallons of water,..101 Litres from getting out of hand,..it flooded into the kitchen but nowhere else,..it took three days of mopping up and drying everything,..luckily we had good weather as all the towels dried quickly,..last to dry was the rug.




Opened a bottle of wine from Portugal,..mmmmm tasty

 

What a horror Philip. What about fish? Is the bedroom above the kitchen? You deserved a good wine! I like the Sado region reds, very soft.

 

Strange for the tank to suddenly leak like that, are the fish all right ?
I'm glad you got everything dried ...

Hi Vicky,..its taken me four days to get everything back to normal,..except for the fish,..one tank was a tropical tank,..heater and filter,..the other is a coldwater tank,..just filters,..i had to set up a heater in the coldwater tank but low enough so the fish would not be overheated,..at the same time heat the tank warm enough for the tropical fish,..all of the fish placed in the tank are swimming around and feeding,..alas while removing two of the large fish i have had for 22 years,..one died from the shock,..its mate is the silver one on the left below.

 

Hi Michael,..its the first time i ever had a tank spring a leak,..i have the feeling it was down to the guys moving out my old sofa and taking in a new one,..they moved the full tank and stand when i was not present,..i did warn them not to even consider moving a tank full of water,..almost 23 gallons = 122 Litres and weighs 101 Kilo,..one never moves a tank full of water as the pressure shifts and weakens the seals,..after a spell the seal starts to take in lime scale and fish dirt expanding the small gaps in the weakened seals,..then one day it pops open

I love fish tanks When I worked in law in Alabama I has one in my office, with four Angel Fish, a white one, a black one, a gold one and a gold and white one ... let me remember, Marco Polo, Captain Nemo, Christopher Columbus and Vasco de Gama.

Awe sorry to hear about your tank and the loss of one of your fish.

As my Dad loved fish not only did he create ponds in every garden we had but he also had indoor tanks as well, my older sister has inherited his interest and had a huge aquarium in her lounge.....it 's so mesmerising watching them!!

 

I have the habit of saying to someone,..look at me when i am speaking to you,..i even do this to Foxy Molly,..she often ignores me .

You have a good memory Vicky,..you gave your Angels lovely names.

 

As you say its so mesmerising,..looking in at them as they are looking out at us,..you notice it in particular with big fish with big eyes,..they remain in the same position but its the eyes that follow,..its amazing how hobbies are inherited by ones offspring,..i have a son who lived in England for most of his 51 years,..now lives in Donegal,..he asked me would Rabbits keep away Rats ,..

 

Definitely not! We had them trying to get in the hutch!! I kept it very clean , emptying and washing it out daily but they still seemed attracted to it, thankfully they never got into it. However I still shudder at the memory of cleaning it all out one evening and pulling out a fresh load of straw to line the sleeping compartment I was horrified to discover I was holding a very badly decomposing rat...oh my goodness I went into shock and needed a stiff drink to calm my shattered nerves !!!!

Rats are horrid , one of my childhood homes had a lovely stream running through the garden and occasionally the odd rat was spotted. We had a lovely old cat that my parents had before us children arrived on the scene. He moved twice with us from Blackpool down to here on the south coast and survived but in the end he died from being bitten by a huge rat, he was treated by a vet but being an old boy the resulting infection was too much for him to fight. Sad end to such a beautiful cat.

 

@Upsydaisy ,..very sad to read about your cat,.. poor creature wasn't familiar with how dangerous rats are,..there is a small housing estate close to the river and when it starts to rise of course the rats move further inland,..some very huge rats are spotted daily,..one would need to wear gloves there when out in the garden,..thankfully they don't visit my garden.

 

I was out of action for the past few weeks,..all is well now,..still don't have a clear head as yet,..thanks for all the concern folks .

Like most gardens mine is still producing blooms that should be dormant by now.
