    I grew a few Mammoth Reds this year, nothing massive, but they are such nice onions to eat sliced raw with a tomato with a bit of pepper in a door step of bread, no need for cheese. I don't grow many Mammoths as they don't keep as you said, I have had 6 Reds and only one bolted, given the heat we've had, that's pretty good going.

          I grew a few giant Kelsae for seed, they were bulbs from the previous year that didn't store well but somehow survived in the shed. Planted in the spring and let them flower. I collected the seed heads a few days ago and found these little bulbils amongst them, never had this happen before. I'm growing them on to see what happens:

            I seem to remember some of the exhibition growers like these as they are going to be exactly like the parent plant.

              I don't understand how they form in the flower head though, I didn't have a proper look at it just grabbed the head and shook the seed out and these sets fell out at the same time. Only one flower had these.

              I tried growing Egyptian tree onions once that were supposed to do this but they didn't.

              I've grown Egyptian tree onions, and mine did, so maybe you got sold something else?

              I'm thinking back years now to when Medwyn Williams used to write in Garden News magazine, and I think he used to sell these from his prize winners.
