Unfortunately, Windows 10 is now redundant. I would like to update to W11 but the hardware is not up to it. Modern laptops and tablets don't have Optical drives because very few people use them these days. And yes, they do consume battery power if you are using them. A modern laptop can last 12 hours plus on a charge. My hp Pavilion managed about 3, eight years ago, when it was new.

I've not had any problems with Windows 8, but then I probably dont push it to its limits.
I run it in desktop mode, can you still do that with other OS, cant stand all those silly tiles.

I thought 10 was ok for a few years yet, are you saying everyone on W10 is going to have to move to W11?

W10 will continue to be supported until October 14, 2025. However new machines come with W11.

It is if you are thinking of upgrading.

If your upgrading hardware then you have no real option than to go for W11.

But just upgrading existing hardware surely W10 is an option?

I am not talking about upgrading the hardware in an existing computer. I would need a new processor and more to go to W11. You could upgrade the software from W8 to W10 but it hardly seems worth the bother of doing it this late in the game.

Well I could get another three years out of my existing laptop.

Then when your stuck on W11, I could buy a new one in three years time and be on W12.

W10 is still used by over 70% of the world, vs just 13% with W11 which most were probably included with new pcs. ie W11 a flop because of the hardware requirements.
As said, W10 will be supported to 2025, though probably a lot longer with so many users.

                    001396.jpg

Believe you have an option to downgrade to W10 if you buy new pc with W11 just installed.

Equally its may not be too long, late next year (?) before W12 is released and talk suggests some of the hardware requirements may not be as restrictive or it too may flop.

Not sure what you mean by "Desktop mode" ? vs ... ?

Which version of W8 are you on the old W8.0 or the later W8.1 ?
W8.0 is long gone and 8.1 will be totally unsupported in a few months ( hence those messages) so would upgrade to W10 just for the better security and support for at least 3 more years.

If you use a paid for antivirus program check that they will still offer support for W8 next year as it might not be possible.

If you do want to upgrade to W10, the best way to do it, is take a full system back up of your existing W8 to another drive or external usb hard drive so that if anything goes wrong with the upgrade or you really do not like W10 your can restore back to W8.

I'd have to get someone to install it for me, I'd probably cock it up.
Dont even know how to do a full system back up.

I dont use all those tile things, I still use a mouse and like to see files and stuff as it always has been.

Not easy if its not your thing, worth asking around for a good person or local small computer shop who will do it for a reasonable fee.
Just make sure you save and remove all your private data /passwords before letting them loose on it.

The Tiles, nah, they are their, but only if you specificaly open their window.

                          Pic of a typical W10 screen(not mine) , no tiles around !
As always you can change the background to whatever you like including your own pictures.

                          001399.jpg
If we hit the Windows icon it opens the Tiles menu but it also has a list of all programs available, which can be quiet handy.
All the flashing /animated tiles can be removed /turned off so you just have those you actually want.

I have no icons on my desktop. I just use the taskbar and the tiles I need on the Start menu.
This is my desktop (two screens - top one is large monitor, lower one the laptop screen).

I'm on Windows 10 and like to keep it back in the old style. I don't use a laptop and prefer a desktop. This computer, with tower, I bought a year ago and it has a DVD drive in it. Didn't even think that they came without but I don't know much about them.

                              This is my desktop
