Will these be okay in pots over winter

Hi,

i forgot what these are called ( ?) But orders a dozen , rather pricey, online and potter them up .

will they be okay in pots overwinter or would you advise to plant them in ground now , rather than spring?

Hi @Shaneoak they look maybe like thalictrum. If so they could do with being planted out, rather than have to remember to look after the pots when they die down. (Yes, I've frequently forgotten things in pots.)

 

They look like Thalictrum to me also. They do well in the ground, usually in moist soil, and are quite hardy so could be planted out now.
They will die right down in the winter so you could put a label to show where they are.
However if you would rather plant them in the spring they'll be ok in the pots as long as they don't dry out too much.

 

Thanks. I was worried they'd die with the Yorkshire frosts if i plant them out. I did this with delphinium's in October and they vanished by the time April came round! Yes! they are thalictrum. I ust looked at my order again. cheers

You could give them a bit of protection in the first year, e.g. mulch or a layer of grit. Subsequent years they'll be fine.

You could have lost your Delphiniums because of slugs, they will devour Delphiniums and that's why I don't grow them, I've given up

 

Those things are a nightmare- My heuchera's are vanishing bit by bit and i think its snails, but i never see them eating the leaves. I think i'm giving up on Heuchera's They are just getting decimated.

 

I've never seen the effects of slugs on my Heucheras either. Do you have them in pots ? Vine weevils are very partial to Heucheras and whenever I've grown them in pots I've lost them due to the grubs eating the roots. I always plant them in the ground and they seem to grow well there.

 

Agree. with Michael, I bet you anything that it's the horrid vine weevils attacking your Heucheras @Shaneoak . I have a lot of the plants, but never grow them in pots now and I never have any problems anymore.

Yes they do live in the ground too but they usually have less of an effect.
They tend to go for my shrubs and cut chunks out of the leaves. Next year I intend to treat the worst affected part of my garden with a vine weevil killer.
