You compost chickens and cats?

 

Our council collect food waste separately to the recycling and landfill/black bags. It's in a small caddy, we only have a small amount that goes in there, cooked left overs like bones and rarely something that's gone out of date. All uncooked vegetable waste like potato peelings go on our compost heap. I think most people stick them in the council caddy. Not sure if any of that counts as food waste as it's inedible.

 

That's about 10% of the average amount eaten per person. I've never thought about it before, it's one heck of a lot.

 

Commas are optional when I read other people's posts. It makes for a more enjoyable read.

 

I can't understand people wasting food but that may go back to the days of rationing which I still remember well.

Our council take food waste in the garden recycling bin but we never put anything in there. What little food waste we have, mainly veggie peelings etc. goes in the compost and the very little meat trimmings and all bones go onto the back lawn. The red kite, crows and magpies clear everything up - usually after the cat visitors have had a look.

Most supermarkets have now removed the 'Best Before' dates from fresh fruit and veg and some have done it on milk. 'Best before' was just a guideline and could confuse people as it was only a guesstimate anyway. They now expect people to use their commonsense on whether something is still edible.

'Use By' dates will still remain on meats, fish and some dairy products but you should still use commonsense with regard to these (you can smell whether milk is off etc.). Of course, with people using freezers a lot then these dates don't always apply anyway and you need to revert to commonsense again.

'Sell By' dates were removed a few years ago as that was only an internal supermarket notice for stock control. For supermarkets to use stock control they now only put 'Sell By' on the outer box that things come in.

 

That's a rather frugal diet!

 

Our grandchildren are a bit unpredictable when it comes to eating, we had to throw out various lunch nibbles when they visited on Saturday. Sometimes it's just the wrong colour bagels or a sausage that has a microscopic bit of sauce. Yet they eat the sauce separately and other times will gobble every morsel and ask for seconds.

 

I'm still old school . Guest, including young children, are asked in advance about what they don't/can't eat.

It was a bit more difficult yesterday as they have a young son who is on the spectrum and won't eat certain things but can't explain why. Then it becomes a matter of take it or leave it but the rest of us will eat it instead. I know he really loves crunchy roast potatoes so I simply cooked a load extra and he could eat anything else if he wished. He tried things off other people's plates and found a few things he liked. Apparently he would not have eaten them if put directly on his plate originally.
