He only did a u turn because he could see he wouldn't get it through parliament.
Even his own side was against it.

I think the big question is why did he think it was a good idea in the first place.

His argument was that it would simplify the tax system, and in any case the top rate doesn't raise very much.

It only raises 6 BILLION per year.

Then maybe we should raise it to 50%

Or we could simplify the whole tax system and completely do away with income tax altogether.:dunno:

I dont think his argument holds water.:roflol:

He's effectively said 6 billion quid isn't worth the hassle of collecting.

That's a pretty daft thing to say at a time when ordinary working people are really worried about their finances, when the coppers have recently been told off for not investigating crimes, and when workers from multiple industries are going on strike for better pay and conditions.

I thought the initial reason given for the cut in higher rate tax was to stimulate the economy. That seems a good idea to spur on a few high flyers, but was bound to be unpopular with the vast majority of workers.

I can't see this government surviving the remainder of their term. Practically imploded already!

The pundits were talking about a new chancellor by the end of the week and Truss out by the end of the year!

But didn't we see this coming? They're like football managers - easy come, easy go as soon as they make a mistake. They should have held onto Boris, at least he was the 'devil' we all knew.

I just have minor moans at the moment but being a Grumpy Old Man I may get around to voicing them. :heehee:

I just got an email from BT (my phone and internet supplier) offering something (didn't bother to look) saying:-

"The more you spend, the more you save in your exclusive offer."

I save even more if I don't spend anything.

I'm surprised Truss is getting so much hassle from the people at the party conference.
After all, they voted for her, we didn't.

They're going to do it again! It beggars belief, but after moving the goalposts on the State pension retirement age, especially detrimental to women, the government are 'studying' the possibility of pushing the age up to 68. Apparently, it's all based on no-one spending more than a third of their life in retirement...fat chance! If they were honest (fat chance of that either) they'd admit that the aim is for the majority to die before ever claiming their pension.

At the risk of causing an argument .
But raising the pension age was only "especially detrimental to women " because it had in past been exceptionally favourable to women. :stirpot:
No offense meant but it would have been nice if they had lowered the Male retirement age to 60.

But that was never going to happen.

On behalf of Mrs JWK I do agree with you @pete with a 'but' :). The problem was the age rise wasn't communicated in time for women close to retirement to tuck more away for an extra 5 to 7 years. It suddenly went from 60 to nearly 67 for my wife out of the blue. Like many she wasn't working and had no means to make up the difference. For younger folk starting out in a career knowing you can't get a pension till you're 67 isn't so bad.

The state pension retirement age is increasing in other countries. As of the 1st Jan 2022 it was 67 in Denmark, that is to increase to 68 within the next decade. In some countries, those aged 20 when entering the workforce in 2016 could see the state pension retirement age increase to 70+, I will not be surprised if the same happens in the UK.

I think the state pension retirement age should be linked to years contributed in to the state pension system. I started full time employment when I was 16 and don't feel its right that my retirement age for state pension age should be the same age as someone entering the workforce at an older age.

I believe in equality, when a women does the same job as a male they should be paid the same rate, so, I do support retirement age being equal, but not how the government went about it.

I didn't realise women were told of the rise in that way @JWK ,I thought it was stepped up in a similar way mine was, admittedly mine only went up one year, but I thought women's pension age was moved to 63 for a few years and then to 65 etc..

If you're not working, then you are unlikely to be paying into a pension anyway, I wouldn't have thought.
