Have you seen the specifications of some of our new fighter planes? The F35, from what I can gather is purpose built for taking out ground targets very effectively while it's self, remains undetected.

We have no idea what is available to the US military. The only weapons we know about are the ones they want us to know about. The same with the electronics. Don't you think that in the last 60 years they have been designing and building to take out Russian silos?

        I'm sure they have.
But I wonder if the Russians have been doing the same, knowing Putin civilian targets might well be on the no1 list, but then we have probably got Moscow on our no 1 list.
I just think you have to be pretty quick off the mark if you are going to take out missiles in their silos before launch.
In fact you might have to be the first one to push the button.

Faslane is probably top of the list up your way.

        No one would be safe.

But lets hope it doesn't come to that.

Its the time they take to get there.
        Unless we strike first?

I'm no expert, but from what I can gather following the news, I believe it takes time to prepare to launch a nuke. The MOD keeps releasing highly vetted intelligence reports. They regularly mention that they're watching for any change of activity around the nuclear bases.

I based on this, if the intel suggested that Russia was actually preparing to fire a nuke, I kind of expect they wouldn't wait to see what happens next. I think they'd use the preparation time to initiate their own strike.

So in the eyes of the world, strike first.
What about Russian submarines, its just a miserable can of worms that should not be considered even opening.
I cant see anyway we could come out of this unscathed.

            I agree. It's a total mess.

I don't know what Russia has in terms of submarines, or what NATO has to counter them.

As for first strike, as you say, it's a messy situation. I hope the military and the diplomats can figure it out. But the way I see it, sometimes you can't plan too far ahead. Sometimes you just got to do what's necessary to survive. I'm not sure we should wait to see if London gets levelled before deciding how to respond, just so that we can tell the world we were just defending ourselves.

The West's first strike doesn't have to be nuclear.

Talk of a preemptive strike by the west is absurd. It would walk us straight in to what Putin is baiting us to do and 'justify' a huge escalation with probably China and Iran involved.

Most of the technology has been back engineered - from 'exotic materials'. Is it just a strange coincidence that the first man to walk on the moon was named Neil Armstrong? What do you get if you read the first 5 letters of his name backwards? Just saying - that's all....:)

If Putin is about to launch then we have to go first. I do not think China would get involved and Iran is a non-event.

Why? Putin then just turns around and says it was a planned training exercise and how irresponsible of the west to initiate nuclear war. We're talking small tactical nukes here so advance warning will be next to nothing and we have to wait until it is deployed before any action (which will already be planned, positioned and ready in all respects). The west cannot shoot first.
