    You'll need at least 18" of soil. They need planting at the same level or an inch or two below where they were in the pot. I'd try and get planted before December if you can. Just so the roots can establish prior to the winter. It won't harm if you have to plant on December. You must avoid planting on a frosty/snowy day though.

      @JWK
      Would you agree that if the intended site is exposed to wind, or the plants bare -rooted, that our OP should prune heavily, to two buds, so that the new bushes establish roots before top load?

      Thanks for the reply , theres definitely not 18 inches of soil in the garden. Can anyone suggest a fruiting plant that will grown in maybe 4 or 5 inches of soil :smile:

      What kind of soil do you have? It is always worthwhile providing details of (approx) location and soil type.
      While 18" may be ideal, they will make the best of what there is. Plenty of organic matter/bonemeal will help. Mine do alright without that depth of viable soil, having marine clay /silt over chalk. You could look at blueberry, gooseberry,strawberry also. Blackcurrants will also grow in containers, so long as these are large enough (25litre +) so long as sufficient water is provided, you could also build raised beds.
