I bought a peach tree which came in a 5l container. I have transfered it into a larger container. In that larger container is 25l top soil at the bottom and on top of that is 20 l compost however there is still space in the container , what should i add ? should i add more top soil ? more compost ? or maybe stones ? i also have some sand i could add . I just want to give the tree a security so that it doesnt get blown down etc

    Many Thanks

I'd be using something like john innes no 3, i dont think it's a good idea to have layers of soil and compost, it's much better to mix whatever you are using so that the roots have consistency in the pot.

So you would put a layer of john inner no 3 on top of the compost layer ?
. Interestingly I read somewhere online that there is no point in mixing compost with soil which is why I put it in like this

No personally i would use john innes no3 for my pot, i don"t know where you've read that about not mixing your soil, even if you're planting in soil you would modify it to suit by digging in manure, grit, compost for example.

Ideally you want maximum weight at the bottom to counterbalance the tree, so shingle, soil/blended with compost and perhaps a mulch of bark or gravel on the top. How tall do you expect it to grow?
I have several grown from seeds which are now in their 6th year, about 5ft tall and wide but which have not flowered . They have outgrown pots and are established in the ground as a break between flower beds and veg garden. Their future is pending decision...

This is a dwarf type so I'm not so sure how big it will grow but i will be amazed if it fruits in this climate. Im worriedaboutit being blown down which is why i want to top up the container. I used westands container and basket compost.
I guess if people have been using john innes for near 100 years I should give it some. Its the first plant in the garden and I have no tools which makes digging it out hard . I'm also wondering if there was any point in putting soil in it should I just have planted it in the compost ?? I might top it up tomorrow with a mix of no3 and soil ???

No need, they are totally hardy in my opinion.

Thanks its just that i am noticing that its getting colder and windier . I assumed that the peach tree was more used to tropical climates so would need a fleece to keep it warm but i m reading from you guys that it should be fine ?

It should be fine but make sure the pot is off the ground with clay feet keeps it well drained .. and put next to the house wall it wont do well in exposed areas ....they grow best agains a wall or a fence and a sunny spot ... to be honest I wouldn't of re potted now I would of waited till Late February as it wont put any roots into the new compost ... but all done now ..

you will need to make a clear protected cover from the rain before it produces leaves as it will get peach leaf curl if you dont... ...
