Last time it was suggested we stopped altering the clocks they said it's more about school kids getting to school in daylight.
I think there was also people who live in the north mostly Scotland saying it wouldn't get daylight until around 10am in mid winter.

Plus it's dark when the children leave school.

Listening to my kids talking in the back of the car, they've reinvented medieval time keeping.

I heard them say they think sunrise and nightfall should be the same time every day, and just have a really complicated clock that changes automatically to compensate for differing day length.

I think I blew their minds when I told them that's exactly what used to happen. The day was split into 12 chunks, which is why there are 12 hours on the clock. Night was just the night time.

Interesting aside, in England, the time was set locally right up until steam trains became a viable means of mass transportation. Someone on the railways realised you can't possibly coordinate trains between many different towns and cities if everyone had their own idea about what time it was. Another interesting time related aside, the watch is called the watch, rather than the wrist clock, because it wasn't meant for keeping the time as such, other as a reference point for navigation at sea, by whoever was on watch duty.

          Not round here it isn't.
They seem to leave school about 2.30 these days.
Hardly seems worth them turning up.

Holy smokes. I never realized that Europe only has 3 time zones.

For lessons about time/zones etc. Greenwich is the place to go. I was hypnotized by the clockworks. And the walk up the hill was a good little bit of exercise :)

If they change to four, then Portugal, Ireland and Iceland will be the same at Azores out there in the Atlantic. We have been there ... so truly beautiful we thought of buying there!

If we were still in the EU I'm sure they would put a time zone right down the middle of Britain.
It's the kind of thing they would love to do just pi** us off.

I remember seeing an old black and white movie about a gambling syndicate making money on the result of the Epsom Derby because the time was five minutes different in London and Scotland. So the result of the 4.30 p.m. race was known before the clock reached 4.30 p.m. in Scotland. The 'baddies' phoned the result to their people up there and the bets were put on.

The overwhelming majority of Europeans want the stupid practice stopped, but from what I've read and heard, it's not happening because it's too complicated to reach a 'mean time' amongst all the member states. So why don't they just revert to the system whereby you change your watch if you enter or leave a country in a different time zone? To a certain extent, that's what we do worldwide already. I'd infinitely rather do that than go through this rigmarole twice a year!

Its been years since I last travelled abroad, but the EU was very well established when I last did.

I remember having to change my watch by one hour for Spain, I think two hours for Greece, and I think Lanzagrotty was on the same time as us in the UK. All of which, including the UK, were definitely EU members back then, so I can't see why they feel the need to get the whole of the EU onto a standard time now.

Surely time zones are a totally different thing to daylight saving.
Europe, EU, needs time zones due to its spread eastwards, cant see a problem, the rest of the world seem to manage it.

When I was in the merchant navy (60 years ago :old: :hate-shocked:) and we sometimes had to change our clocks every two days! The clocks changed at 2 a.m. :noidea:

Well yes, they are, but that's the reason given for not scrapping the clock changes, despite it being approved in principle 4 years ago.....
