I got into the habit, many years ago, of never using a debit card as you don't get Section 75 protection with it. I know that it doesn't kick in with credit cards until you spend £100 but I never have my debit card with me just in case I make a mistake and use it when I shouldn't. Although I do need to make sure the Credit card is paid of each month (have that on Direct Debit).

I never use a debit card online, always the credit card.
In fact that is the only reason I have a credit card, wouldn't bother otherwise.

Section 75 certainly provides useful protection, but for debit cards, if it's visa, you can raise a dispute and let the bank handle it. It's not quite as solid as section 75 but has the advantage that there's no lower limit.

I've recently started using my credit card for pretty much everything but for a different reason. If I accidentally spend too much, my credit card interest rate is actually lower than my agreed overdraft rate.

That's correct but you have no guarantee they will do anything about it. It's called Chargeback with debit cards. Credit cards will also investigate for you even if it is below £100 but there's no guarantee.

I also use my credit card as they give me cashback on everything I spend. :noidea:

Most online sites accept payment via PayPal nowadays. Just link either you debit or credit card to your PayPal account and opt into, the pay-in-3. Then when you make a purchase, you have 3 months interest free, you just have to make sure you pay 3 equal payments or set it up automatically.

When I make purchase online for the business, I always use PayPal mainly for VAT purposes, makes things easier when doing the accounts.

If you're spending over £100 then you should use the credit card directly and not through Paypal. Using Paypal invalidates your protection under Section 75. :noidea:

Under £100 it's OK but beware of Paypal's t's & c's as their own guarantee has eligibility terms.

I prefer not to scatter my credit card details around to all and sundry on the internet.

Most banks and card companies have pretty reasonable security, as does PayPal. I always use PayPal for buying on ebay (they're the same company) unless the item is more than £100. I never use a debit card as there is insufficient protection by the bank for being scammed by the seller.

                  Quotes:-

"Breaches of credit card data appear to be flowing at a greater rate than ever. The fault seems to lie with the retailers who accept credit cards, not with the credit card issuers. The problem in these and most other cases appears to be malware targeted at point-of-sale devices."

"Recently, however, PayPal's security protocols have been called into question. The ethical hackers (paid by PayPal) found ways to bypass certain PayPal security features, such as the one-time pin and two factor authentication. PayPal reportedly brushed the issues off."

Its not the security of the bank or credit card that concerns me.
Its the security of the seller I am giving my card information to that concerns me.

Paypal may be leaky but why risk 30 or 40 other leaky systems when buying and paying direct with your card details.

For a long time Pay pal badgered me to link my bank account to them rather than the credit card, they seem to have given up on that now and I just continue with the credit card.

I dont think anything is "safe" online, its just the gamble you take if you use modern systems of payment.

An incidental but eBay spun out PayPal as a business in its own right in 2015

Google pay is another option for people. Don't ask me how but the mechanism is such that the seller doesn't ever see your bank details so they can't be shared, sold on or hacked

Which is why I use pay pal, there are others as well I believe.
Why let the whole world know you card details.

The only time I've ever been robbed online is when PayPal decided to take nearly 300 quid for a courier service for something I'd never ordered or even heard of.

I got it back about a week after reporting it but to this day, I never received any explanation.
