Listening to Jeremy Vine on radio 2,, today's debate is around childcare costs.

I've read plenty on this topic in recent weeks and forgive me if I've got this wrong, but the common theme I'm detecting is this idea of self entitlement.

Life is a sequence of choices. When my wife and I chose to start a family, we decided between us that I would go out to work and she would stay home and be there for the kids and keep the house homely. I know plenty of others who choose to have both parents at work and the kids in childcare. I make no judgement. Each to their own. I'm sure everyone is trying to do their best and neither approach is right or wrong, just different. But surely part of the decision making process should be around costs. I'm hearing and reading of people that are not benefiting financially by going to work, after paying childcare costs. I get that they want to keep their career for when the kids are older, but I don't get how people make their choices, then complain about the outcome of those choices, blame everyone else, and expect others to pay for their choices.

 

And then there are some that have numerous children who expect the state to fund them; Also some that want their local council to knock through 2 houses to provide one large house.

 

When my wife and I had our children she stayed home and I worked. I worked shifts and as much overtime as I could to keep us comfortable and she stayed home to look after the house and children. Once the kids were teenagers she got a part-time job and I came off shifts. It was a decision we made. Our priorities were children being looked after by us and a home to come home to at lunchtime (primary school) and at the end of the school day. We would never have dreamt of foisting them off on our parents after school.

 

I think that is the problem with society these days, everyone thinks they have "rights" to do this and do that, taking no consideration of the finances and how they will cope.
When it then goes wrong for them they expect the state to pick up the tab.

I do think that often these days it needs two pay packets to pay a mortgage.

But not sure it should be down to the state to look after the kids while they are doing it, it is their choice.
I often see people jetting off on expensive holidays and wonder how they manage it bearing in mind we all need our energy bills propping up by the state.
Things have gone really wrong and attitudes have to change.

 

Just paid my TV licence £159, rip off.
I'm sure its gone up, cant remember what I paid last year but it really excessive just to watch tv.

 

I'm turning my set to black & White.
Is that allowed?

 

Strange that if you are blind and cant even see the picture it's still more expensive than B&W.
I would have thought that should be sorted out at least.

Yes, I agree @pete the charge for a blind person should be the same as B&W or perhaps even less!

We don't pay a TV license. Any signal that we can grab out of the air is free however the minute you go to satellite or cable or fiber, the cash register starts ringing. And even the most basic package is a lot more than your colour license fee.

 

Unfortunately it is still a colour receiver and still needs a colour licence.
