I suppose it depends on how far you want to go back in time.

If someone asked me a few times where I came from and kept asking because I didn't give them the answer they were looking for I would be annoyed or, possibly, insulted. I was born in this country, as were my parents. How much further are you expected to go back. Do I tell them Portugal - my father's family left there 550 years ago. :rolleyespink:

Would you even think of asking someone their familial origins?

The only reason I can think of for the persistent questions was because she was black. :noidea:

The fact she remembers word for word what was said suggests to me she was "on a Mission".

There appears to be some misunderstanding at the beginning of the conversation, but after that when she actually understood what she was really asking she became evasive, and played it along presumably to make a big fuss about it with the media afterwards.

Attached is the text. Personally, I found it most offensive.

Basically she was just asking what part of Africa her family came from.
Just shows how you can try to start a conversation with someone and end up in all kinds of a mess if they want to be difficult.

And then talk about it afterwards.;)

Probably should have just walked away, but then that wouldn't have been right either.

Probably, there is a current voucher code for Morrisons VOU6276579 but it is only for selected accounts. I guess those who have not made an online purchase or uninstalled the app lately, were probably the only ones to receive an email.

On this controversial conversation thing about where someone came from, I've just read the account of the conversation. Here's my take.

Yes, it is mildly offensive if we take as gospel that one side of the story. That's all I've got, so that's what I'll work with.

I can see it would be really annoying. But I didn't see anything in the transcript that implies that the old lady meant anything derogatory. It just reads like she was curious, and didn't know when to stop. I can see how this would be really annoying.

Is it worthy of mass media uproar and someone losing their job?

Well, I would ask who among us has never been badgered by an annoying person? I would further ask of those of us that have been annoyed by an irritating person, how many of us created a media storm that resulted in someone losing their job?

To pick one example from my own personal experience, I once had to deal with a guy at work who was hellbent on convincing everyone I was a Jew. He grilled me relentlessly over it one time. As it just so happens, I am not a Jew, but I handled it calmly by asking him what difference it would make it I was. I suggested to him that his tone suggested he saw being Jewish as something negative and wished to use it to adversely affect working relationships with my colleagues, and that would amount to discrimination, which is illegal, and for which he could be sacked. I reiterated that if I had so happened to be a Jew, I would not see that as a negative thing, and the fact that he seemed to was clear discrimination and asked if he would like to pursue the matter further in a meeting with HR. The problem went away, and nobody lost their job and it didn't make the news.

Ngozi Fulani from Sistah Space did not give the name of the Lady involved. That only came out later in the proceedings. The palace described the remarks as "unacceptable and deeply regrettable". And a spokesperson for Prince William said "racism has no place in our society".
So it was not just me that found her manner offensive.

                    With all the
Meghan problems regarding the Royal family they are skating on thin ice and any one who wants to play the race card will be heard and listened to, especially by the media.

Something the Royal family will be well aware of.

I'm always curious about where people lived before coming to Canada but the trigger for asking about it has nothing to do with colour, it's the interesting accents that draw my attention. If I enquire, I usually ask about their accent and am happy to hear about their motherland.

The way I read this conversation, the woman pestering this person was just plain stupid, thick, moronic, idiotic, dim witted.... what a pillock!

Being a white (now old) lady, I suffered a great deal of harassment over my colour when I was a young, single mother. I was a minority in my neighbourhood and regularly got persecuted as I went about my daily business. I didn't care about myself but my two young lads had to see this obnoxious behaviour.

That said, I totally understand what it is like to be categorized by appearances only and it demonstrates just how ignorant some people are. You also cannot see if a person already has a chip on their shoulder either!

                      Moan over..

It's just how posh people make small talk, they ask "What do you do" or "Where do you come from". They are at a bit of a loss how to speak with ordinary people. The older lady was looking for some common ground and trying to engage with the younger person, who if that transcript is true, was being deliberately stubborn.

Trying to pick apart a small talk conversation like that is making a mountain out of a molehill.

Some people these days just look for opportunities to take offence. Contrary to the goals of inclusivity, I think it has the exact opposite effect. People dare not speak any more in case there's been some new social shift that they haven't heard about yet.

A colleague turns up at work with a new hair style. It really suits them. Ignore it. Compliment them and they might say it's sexual harassment. Another colleague has an accent that's unfamiliar to you. Don't ask them about it, if they have foreign origins it may be racist.

I'm all for equality. I think society has lost sight of the fact that equal does not mean identical in every respect. We should not be ashamed of our individual uniqueness, and if it comes up in conversation we should not be too quick to assume malice.
