I often wonder what these royals actually find to say when they meet the public, I wouldn't have a clue and would be bound to say the wrong thing.
I know they probably have a set list that they can use.
I just think this has blown up very conveniently with Will and Kate going to America, it's got something of a media stink about it, or even maybe some dodgy inside dealings.

Not really a moan as such, but lots of activity around here regarding the old telecom cabling, they were putting a new telegraph pole, (are they still called that), in a week ago, and I came back yesterday evening and there were cables everywhere and six vans in the road causing chaos. Must have been about 8 blokes wandering round and in a huddle around one of those pits they have the cables in.

One of the existing poles has had a extra clutter added to it.

For some reason all the activity seems to go on after 3pm until its so dark they cant see what they are doing.
I assume its an upgrade of some kind, but not sure how many people actually use the old poles, I dont.

Good evening @pete It could be that it is something to do with supplying FTTP

With FTTP, broadband is carried all the way between your premises and your telephone:dunno: exchange by fibre-optic cable. These fibre-optic cables can be installed underground in ducts or overhead using telegraph poles.

Or could be them getting ready for the changeover from normal landline to having the landline through a router. They intend doing away with landlines.

I would be. This charity, Sistah Space was specifically set up to support African women and girls to help and raise awareness of domestic and sexual abuse, so why the need to keep probing where she is from.

My daughter is British, born and raised in the UK, which is what she would say to someone if asked. Just because her mum originates from Thailand is irrelevant and my daughter would tell you so if she was repeatedly asked where she is from.

I have been asked a number of times, "where did you meet your Thai wife" I have even been asked, "where did you meet your Filipino wife" most were all duly ignored. In these situations, we don't know exactly what was said or the tone it was put over.

I agree that the press and social media have blown this thing out of all proportion (they do it all the time ) but it shouldn't have happened. For someone who has been a member of the royal household for decades she should have known that it was not the right line of questioning to pursue, particularly after the Meghan episode.

I think it's also a generational thing (shouldn't be as I'm the same generation as her :rolleyespink:) and it reminds me of my mother not being keen on the black staff at the 'residential' home she was in. She said words to the effect of 'they are very nice people, but they are black' :hate-shocked:

In this current case the woman was in a position where she should have known better. I heard the interview with Ngozi and she had a typical London accent so there was no real reason to question her in that fashion about her origin except for the colour of her skin (even with an accent there shouldn't be such a reason).

I ran my own business for fifty years and even in the early days that sort of questioning of anyone would be a no-no! Although I don't necessarily agree with how far things have gone in the present day and how touchy people are over what is/was supposedly offensive a person in that position should have known better. :noidea:

All I can say is that at one point she, (old lady), said her people originated in France, why the person in question didnt just reply in a normal manner to the question seems strange.
Admittedly the old girl should have just given up and walked away, but she may have been actually interested.
Black people come from all parts of the world and I think it's a fair question.
If I talk to someone and they have a strange accent I might ask where they are from, am I being offensive, if I am maybe it's best if I don't talk to anyone anymore. :roflol:

You've got the gist of it @pete as @shiney said, even if you are genuinely interested in someone's background, it's best to keep your mouth shut. I get curious because I want to understand the person. Did they or their parents come from a brutal country or have they interesting traditions to share? And I think age is a good equalizer. Old coots can talk pretty much without fear of reprisal because they were brought up to respect others and also with "the sticks and stones rules"!

Unfortunately the woke have made it clear to just shut up and let them dictate. You never know when you might say something, and without realizing it, possibly offend someone. And then you're going to be pilloried by the entire www.

It also depends on the setting. A seeming landmine field is what our social network is these days.

As a result, I think most of us only hang out with those that we are familiar with or we know share our values. It doesn't matter how kind you are, it is how your are peceived/judged by others!

I would have walked away from that obstinate young woman as soon as I sensed her getting her back up!

Did she say that though? Looking at the transcript, the lady in question said " I spent time in France, where are you from".

My Mrs would not find it offensive if someone asked her where she originates from but that does not mean she is going to open in detail and tell everyone who asks.

Ok, perhaps I miss read it but why did she mention France ?
Only to illustrate what she was getting at, as at this time she hadn't realised she was being evasive.
This is only her vague memories of the conversation, unless she had a tape recorder running.

I tell you what I don't think I would remember word for word a conversation.

Me too, I doubt many people could and we haven't heard the older person's side of the story. In fact I respect the older person in keeping quiet, it's much more dignified than making a fuss. Shame on the media for completely biased reporting.

The only thing with all this that I don't agree with is keeping on referring to her as an old person. She's my generation and it's ageist :old: :heehee:. Age shouldn't be a factor.

It was reported that the Lady touched the other women's braids to reveal her name tag, prior to then what was said.

I do know, that if a stranger was to touch my Mrs head or hair and did not apologize then she would go on the defensive. In Thailand it is rude and disrespectful to touch the head of a Thai national, unless it's family or very close friends.
