    Our temperature is 5 degrees, my thermometer said so, so I opened the greenhouse door for a while.

        Popped out to put a kettle of water in the bird baths and noticed the banana plant has ruptured -

        Looks like most of the pups has done that as well as some main stems.

            It didn't go above -4C and is dropping now.

            As I said earlier, I went out into the garden and threw out some fat trimmings for the birds and then sorted out all the bird water bowls that were frozen. The dish that I had the fat trimmings on I put on the arm of a bench whilst I sorted out the water bowls and the greenhouse. When I went to pick up the china dish from the arm of the bench it was frozen solid to it! :doh: I had to put a small amount of slightly warm water in the dish, waited a minute or so and the added more warm water and continued to do that until I was able to unstick it from the bench. Lesson learnt.

              Despite the snow this morning my good lady humphed some planters into the potting shed/workshop and planted Ranunculus, Anemones and Tulips. She left the planters in the potting shed, up off the stone floor, until the weather improves.

                I do but it won't be the end of the world if it croaks. I've given so many away over the years someone will have a spare.
                I've just never seen it happen before, the plant must have been saturated

                        Taking out & bring back in two pots of Clivias! (For at least another week!)

                        Last night before going to bed I covered up my shelving with lots of Geraniums & Pelargoniums with some fleece. Not that I think they really need it but more to be on the safe side. When I say that I mean if some self-sown Nasturtium seedlings can weather 3 or 4 nights with temps at -2C which are also at the front of the balcony up against the railings then these plants that are much further in should have no problems! I also closed up the mini-greenhouse & I just remembered I forgot to open it up again this morning when I took out the Clivias! :gaah:

                            My new morning routine is to break the ice on the pond at 7 am, repeat at 10am. The little critters are thirsty, Mr Blackbird had a lengthy drink and Dunnocks, Robin and Sparrows all seem to appreciate water over feed. We even had a cutest ever vole hopping about the pondlet. :)

                            The birdfeeder needs topping up twice a day. I think the Sparrows consider pigeons as their pets and purposefully shake a lot of seeds to the ground to see the flying-bags-of-fat pecking their way about.

                            All plants are still ok, we'll see how they come through a proper winter. The experimental cactus (labelled - 8c hardy) looks all right even though it must be frozen throughout from top to roots.

                            We'll see.

                                My better half was out deadheading roses this morning now that the rain has cleared away yesterday's snow. Still plenty of lovely blooms left.
