    As far as I think heat pumps are experimental, a few brave souls are taking them up but they realise they are going to be out of pocket but they do it to save the planet.

      When do standard gas condensing boilers become "illegal"? With all the crisis we have had over the past three years, what is the date? Our Worcester boiler is 14 years old now, and it may be worth changing in the next two years.

        Just noticed, this is the Electric Car thread. I seem to be way off topic!

          I am not talking about their human rights in their own country but the threat they pose to the rest of the world.

          @HarryS

          We seem to have strayed slightly off topic! There was talk about dates on the Energy Crisis thread, 2026 seems to be it. It was one of the reasons we decided to replace ours this year.

              Fair enough, but I am uncomfortable with them with regard to their behaviours in other ways and not particularly wild about the fact that we in the west have pretty much funded them to do so.

              Hi,

              For anyone wanting to replace their gas boiler may I suggest looking at "Intergas" my wife and I had an Intergas boiler installed about 7 years ago to replace a troublesome Ideal Isar.

              I'm on a number of forums and Intergas was highly recommended on one of them. Less parts to go wrong so better reliability. These Intergas boilers require professional fitting because water cleanliness is super important.

              Our not old Ideal boiler was costing us over £300 per year just to insure the boiler; British Gas engineers used to detest working on it one winter the BG engineer was here three days trying to sort out leaks; the £300 per year saving has paid for the Intergas boiler and some left over.

              You pay your money you take your choice.

              We won't fit solar panels; heat pump or even consider an EV; better the devil we know.

              Back fully on topic;

              I left school aged 15 and went straight down a deep coal mine as an apprentice mechanical engineer where very strict safety was always adhered to all our lives depending on each other. The video shows horrendous child exploitation; who cares if these children drop dead in a few years due to Cobalt poisoning as long as the planet is saved from global warming; here in the UK our government have spent £M's in aid supplying clean water to these poor souls but now they are being treated worse than animals. It's a very difficult balance because they will be paid a pittance which they wouldn't otherwise receive if this practice was stopped. Give the likes of Elon Musk a shovel and let them do a few years digging Cobalt. Thatcher did the UK a favour closing the coal mines meaning no further deaths from "Dust on the lungs" would you let your child get a job in a coal mine?

              Kind regards, Colin.

                With an EV being heavier than ICE, what affect will this have on those who love caravanning?
                The longer the range of the battery, the heavier the vehicle will be, will the government increase the gross weight like they have for LGV and will they have to do extra training should the car/caravan combination exceed 3500kg.

                Prior to 1997, passing your car test allowed you to drive a vehicle with a gross weight of no more than 7500kg, that vehicle would have to be fitted with a tachograph. The law changed in 1997 were you could only drive a vehicle with a gross weight of 3500kg. Anything above 3500kg has to be fitted with a tachograph, unless you have been granted an exemption where the vehicle does not exceed a set mileage from base, normally set at 50 miles. As far as I am aware the government were looking at changing the laws for alternative fuel vehicles, this would mean an electric LGV would have a gross weight of 4250kg but you would need to take additional training to drive one, I am sure it is even law now.

                Even though there are new models of EV'S coming on to the market, according to buyacar, there is only a handful of EV's that are legally allowed to tow a caravan on the market.

                  One of many unanswered questions surrounding EV's - and I suspect the law of unintended consequences will come into play as well, such as how will multi-story car parks cope with the additional weight? Same question for weak bridges? Will enclosed car parks require special fire precautions/equipment?

                  What about emergency vehicles such as fire engines and ambulances? What about road sweepers and gritters? Bin lorries?

                    I remember reading something about multi-storey car parks, apparently they were built on the bases that the average car weighed 1400kg, loading tests will have to be carried out.

                      The heaviest Tesla weighs 1800kg. An ICE Range Rover weighs 2800kg. An ICE Ford S max weighs 1950kg and even a Skoda Yeti weighs 1450kg. A Kia Sportage EV weighs 1500kg.
                      EVs are not all that heavier than ICE vehicles.

                        Slight tangent but tenuously related seeing as EVs are being pushed for carbon reduction.

                        I watch Sabine Hossenfelder on YouTube. She's a German physicist. In her latest science news she reported on a study into atmospheric CO2 and methane during lockdown. This study (Sabine questions the methods by the way) apparently found that while atmospheric CO2 dropped slightly when most of the world was locked down, methane, which is a more potent greenhouse gas, went up. Apparently the rise in methane was nothing to do with the drop in CO2, but the drop in nitrous oxides. Apparently the latter reacts with methane and splits it down to CO2 and hydrogen, then the hydrogen reacts with oxygen catalysed by sunshine to make water.

                        It's one study, and even the scientist that reported on it questions the methods, but if it's true, it would be quite worrying. Almost like we're in a no win situation when it comes to trying to tackle the climate issue.

                          Only line I really understood, but I think I get the gist of it.

                          This wouldn't surprise me one bit, but best if the world population doesn't know as there would be no money to be made out of climate change.

                          In a nutshell, it's saying vehicle exhaust emissions help break down methane in the atmosphere.

                          If it turns out to be true, then a global shift to EVs would result in more methane building up in the air, which means faster climate change. Unless we immediately change the whole world's agricultural practices at the same time, meaning either we all starve to death or we live off insects and algae. I can't see any of that happening any time soon.

                          If it turns out to not be true, then there's a different problem. The paper has been published. I'm pretty sure the oil companies PR agents will find a use for such a report.
