      I have a backup drive as well as fill a DVD whenever I have enough data. I keep all my RAW images and my edited TIFF images plus one copy of the JPEG images (no need to back them up). These I reduce in size for posting online, as required.

        Over the years I've lost 1000s of photos when computers have broken down. Though I do have lots of photos stored on different devices. But Gphotos has 1000s also backed up going back almost to 2000! They used to be backed up to the same resolution as the originals but some years ago they changed that to a lower resolution. One problem I find with Gphotos is that some photos can be repeated up to 5/6 times! I go into the programme from time to time in an attempt to get rid of duplicates but as they are scattered over many years it very difficult. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a tool to search for duplicates! It's also very time consuming!

          Not a program we have used, but often read about such Free Duplicate Remover programs

          Just search on "best find duplicate photos software 2022" to find a host of reviews.

              I use dupeGuru before I add photos to my folders. It checks if they have been added previously.

                I have an old programme called Picasa 3 that I have been using for many years on different computers! Google stopped supporting it years ago but I just use it to add captions to my photos & correct colour balance. Sometimes I use it for cropping my pictures. As that is all I need then it suits me to continue to use it! :)

                  Hi,

                  This thread has moved on apace since I last looked at it; great replies full of useful information; many thanks.

                  Thanks ricky; I used to have Cyberscub loaded but it's now become rather costly; this used to clear lots of junk out of my computer; strange though Gimp takes quite a while to load whilst other such programs like Irfanview are very quick.

                  I couldn't agree with you more JWK; Gimp is indeed complicated; I've just spent the best part of three days doing some editing with it. I've even been busy on two forums asking for advice as to how to achieve what I wanted to do. Playing my violins I'm seated in the studio and the music score directly in front of me on the bench stand; unfortunately with my normal glasses I can't read the small print on these scores and I can't stand messing around with reading glasses;

                  Violin sound.

                  I hope I'm OK posting these forums. Lots of helpful suggestions but without achieving what I wanted so more time spent;

                  Editing music scores help please.

                  Now here's something of interest and might be very useful to members like you JWK who use Gimp. I've used Gimp for well over ten years mostly for slight editing of images; such as resizing to post on forums and for emailing also to brighten up dull images after all I live in Yorkshire where pit lamps are often needed on the surface; but wanting to modify my music scores removing unwanted sections whilst enlarging the remaining sections proved a real nightmare but I'm as stubborn as they come; I knew what I wanted and I wouldn't quit until I succeeded.

                  Having tried quite a few editing programs like Irfanview and even emachineshopCAD I was getting older very fast so as I like Gimp I wondered if there was a Gimp forum it was worth a try and to my delight yes there is a Gimp forum which I've joined as seen at the link above.

                  I did expect to be loaded up with information from members but just one member "Krikor" kindly offered help and just enough to point me in the right direction; I appreciate posting on forums takes a lot of time so I never abuse this by asking for every little detail; all I need is just enough information then I do the research as I've done with this.

                  It has surprised me by just how difficult this proved to be; I thought it would be very easy indeed but with my luck I should have known I would be in for trouble.

                  I'll now only use Gimp which is a very powerful and totally free editing program tried and trusted over many years by me.

                  Here's one of the pages I modified; I deleted the parts unwanted then could increase the size of what remained making reading this music so much easier. By the time I succeeded I was getting much quicker using the Gimp tools in fact I found a few short cuts too.

                  Now I'm sorted with this next project is learning to read violin music.

                  Kind regards, Colin.

                    Just today I removed at least 1,000 photos from just 3 months in 2017 from Gphotos! I was very surprised to see that some of my photos had up to EIGHT (8) copies!!! But it doesn't seem to duplicate videos very often. I don't take many videos anyway.

                    What annoys me is that from time to time I get a warning message from Google telling me my storage space is getting low & offering me a paid subscription. If they didn't make so many copies of my photos I wouldn't be getting these warning messages! :doh:

                      Regarding photo copies.
                      I only store on my PC and an external hard drive, but I've noticed sometimes when selecting pictures to copy to hard drive it suddenly starts copying pictures, for no apparent reason, and adding them to the bottom of my pictures.

                      Even my old PC used to do this, it something to do with how you click on them but never worked out exactly what is going on.

                      Its a microsoft "thing" I think.

                        @pete there is a Windows feature when you power up an external drive (or memory Stick or DVD, etc) it will perform a specified action, e.g. play a movie if you inserted DVD. In your case it sounds like you have 'Import photos' set as the 'Action'. Go to Settings and Auto-play to change it or leave as is if you are happy:
                        How to manage AutoPlay settings for USB drives and Memory cards on Windows 10

                        I know that link is for Win 10 but this feature has been in older Windows versions for yonks.

                          Interesting @JWK , I'll read through that tomorrow.
                          It usually happens when selecting more than one item, it as if I dont do a definite click on the file and maybe slides a bit as clicking it starts copying.

                            I dont think its that John, it happens when selecting pictures from my SD card which I want to add to my hard drive.
                            Yes when I insert the card it automatically opens my camera software, which I never use, so I shut that down and open up my picture files manually that are already on the hard drive and the SD card shows up there as well.

                            The copying seems to happen if I click on a file and slide slightly at the same time, for some reason it then starts copying that file and adding it on the end of the rest, once it starts doing it I have stop if fast otherwise I end up with hundreds of copies to delete.

                              @pete re the camera sd to pc problem, assume your camera has a usb connector ? if so when you connect it to the pc ( not sure which version of windows your are on ?) once it works out what camera is connected ( it takes a bit longer on the very first connection) it loads up all your cameras photos and asks you to select which you want to import to your Pictures folder.
                              Always worked ok for us, no duplicates like you are being troubled with, plus saves handling the sd card.

                              Assume you know there are several free Photo Duplicates programs out there which will find and delete any, as you instruct.
