I have no intention of changing my car within the foreseeable future but the main dealers sent me an offer to value my car, over the internet. The car is four years old, petrol, and has done just over 20,000 miles (about half the miles I used to do before the pandemic). The valuation is at 50% of what I paid for it. To replace it with an EV (that's all they do now) would cost me over twice the price I paid for my petrol car.

I didn't want an EV anyway but the economics of it are crazy. I'll keep the car for another ten years and see what is on offer then - if I'm still allowed to drive :old: :heehee:

My car is 10yrs old this year, only done 65000miles
My dilemma is, do I change it now for a newer second hand one or hang on for another couple of years or so, at which point there might be a lot of second hand petrol cars available as everyone will be rushing out to buy EV.

I dont think I'll ever get an EV unless some kind of price sanity dawns on the motor trade.

Below is who I used to advertise my VW UP, their valuation was the best and I got exactly what they quoted, might be worth checking out what they value your car at.

Sell Your Car The Motorway Way | Get Your Best Price

I can understand someone purchasing an EV if they can afford it and have access to home charging, but if you don't and your clocking up the miles then an EV is probably more expensive to run with these tariffs.

Ubitricity, which is where you charge from a lamp post is 45p per kWh off peak and 79p peak.
        Ionity is 67p
Tesla is 54p off peak, 67p peak
Gridserve is 44p on a low power 22kw charger, 65p rapid.
        BP Pulse 44p using a 22kw charger, 50p on a 50kw charger

I am currently getting 52mpg at 143.9p per litre, that relates to 12.5p per mile. You could never break even using charging stations, even charging from home you would have to clock up a fare amount of miles or keep it for 10 years plus to break even.

I'd keep it Pete if it's gets through the MOT ok each year.

I have just bought my 13-year-old Fabia and will, like every other car I have ever owned, I will run it into the ground. This time, it is a case of which of us goes into the ground (or compost heap) first.

Thanks. I only checked the price because they offered. I have no intention of getting rid of my car. I usually keep my cars for at least 100,000 miles. At the rate I'm driving now it means I could still have it in 20 years time. :heehee:

The new EV version of my car is now 68k

Volvo? The company claim, you would have to do between 30k and 68k miles pending on the energy mix for charging before you start to reduce your carbon foot print compared to the ICE version.

Yes, Volvo S90. I've been driving them for 48 years. As far as I'm concerned, although I really like them, they have priced themselves out of the market.

It must be the same article I read last week. Its York council and they have apparently purchased 25 Fiat E-Ducato vans, at £8 million. That works out at £320k per van, that's if the whistle blower or journalist has got their figures correct.

The dearest Fiat E-Ducato van is £87K so unless they bought chassis cabs with Rolls Royce bodywork then the report is a load of manure.

It wouldn't surprise me if York Council made such a stupid decision. I remember not long ago they bought the ex London Boris bendy buses if ever there was a more unsuitable city, anyone been down The Shambles?

I haven't read the article, and even if I had I'd have no way to fact check it. But here's my thoughts.

Years ago I worked for 10 years for a private company servicing a huge government contract. I don't know if local councils are the same as central government, but on our contract, everything was many times more expensive than it should have been.

A PC base unit that would have cost me about 200 quid if I'd bought myself retail, was on the approved catalogue at around 2 grand. A replacement desk phone was on at 300 quid, plus a monthly service charge.

That's just physical assets. Other costs were insane too. At the time the government used an independent auditor's firm to make sure they were getting best value for money. The auditors charged over a grand per day per consultant, and they were on permanent retained. The company also charged my time to the contract, at a rate of four times what I got paid just for me being on the books, then an additional 8 times what I got paid for every day I worked on their contract, which was every day, because servicing that contract was my full time job.

All in all, it really opened my eyes as to why government projects are always insanely expensive.

I have no idea if councils work the same way, but I'd guess that the final bill will be significantly more than the sum of the value of the physical assets bought.

It seems like that other media source have not exactly reported the facts. Looks like they did purchase 25 electric vans which are currently being stored due to lack of charging points. The £8 million figure is what the York council are budgeting to spend to replace its entire fleet plus install charging points etc etc by 2030
