Just read in the current Computer Active magazine about LastPass and its supposed security breach last August where the company said " no evidence of any access to customers data or passwords " and carried on as nomal.

Seems late December they had been found out for misleading everyone as the hackers were able to access customers details, though seemingly not the actual encrypted passwords.

However that kind of personal data can be readily used in Phishing attacks etc as with such valid info you could think the mail etc was genuine.

Security commentators recommend that LassPass users change both their Master Password and every Password in the vault as it best to assume your passwords could have been accessed.

The magazine also suggested changing to BitWarden.

I wouldn't recommend any commercial password manager like lastpass, it stores your passwords in the cloud and you have to pay for it.

I've used the free opensource keepass product for years. Opensource means it's using public domain software and is maintained by enthusiasts rather than a business who have other agendas.

I kind of get, remember password, in chrome, I use it for non sensitive sites.
I think if we are now getting sites that remember our passwords it tends to suggest passwords are a complete waste of time.

Some of my passwords I remember, others not so much. Banks don't let you use stored passwords and have additional authentication so less of an issue. Frankly I'm not interesting enough to have other people want to know my passwords

Up until a couple of years ago I used Lastpass for many years as it was free but once they started to charge for it I left them & went to Bitwarden but I don't like it as much as Lastpass!

I don't use a password site and don't use the cloud. :noidea:

Unimportant passwords, such as logins to my clubs etc., are just stored in my computer - and written down in clear in a book. Important passwords are stored in my head and also encrypted elsewhere with my own brief code of truncated 'memory words'. The memory words are shortened clues to the password of something memorable in my past.

An example (not one I use :heehee:):- HimRwLop is short for Himalayan Railway Loop which would lead me to the password Batasia. If the password required numbers as well, most do, I might use the number of the month or year I was there but not have that written down.

I've never, yet, needed the memory jog :fingers crossed: but may require it with advancing years :old:

I also have secure passwords for bank access etc, and a single day to day password for shopping and other non critical sites. Some sites use a secondary 6 digit number pass key, where you need to enter, say, the third fourth and sixth numbers. I use an old telephone number for this, easy to remember.
Sometimes TV programmes have an IT expert on, who often say have a different password to each site! This would be a route to insanity.

This is where a password manager turns up trumps! ALL the sites I visit & that require login info are handled by a password manager otherwise, as you say, it would be madness! :rolleyespink::th scifD36:

I have a different password for each site. It is really easy too. I came up with a formula which used some of the letters in the site address and then a numberic code based on that formula. If I haven't been to a site recently, it does take me a minute to figure it out again but so far, so good :fingers crossed: and touching wood... :)
