Has anyone had this experience with Topdressing?

Can agree with all the above points but would add:
Lift your mowing height to allow the recovering grass to grow; grass requires top to produce energy by photosynthesis, to develop full root structure. Many lawns are ryegrass, a tall grass and will grow roots as deep as the developed top is high. Once it shows signs of recovery, it may be reduced to an acceptable level; about twice the average! Finer grasses can be sown, either by resowing or even by oversowing although they will struggle against the more vigorous larger species. Moss is a symptom rather than a complaint, of poor drainage and less than vigorous grass.Once the grass is revitalised, it will respond to a light but frequent top dressing of sieved organic compost or manure, to feed the soil biology.
