Bearing in mind that the newer PCs seem to have less storage and I keep getting Microsoft wanting me to use the cloud it's only going to get worse.

I've got external backup drives but am thinking of getting more. I don't use the Cloud at all. I used to use Photobucket but after their big con  it made me avoid anything to do with the Cloud.

I think cloud storage is fantastic, access to all your files anywhere you go is incredibly useful. When you have a connection. And when various platforms let you use it one way or another...
I expect the water restrictions didn't apply to data centres as it's required for cooling

It's a good facility but according to reports the latest planning application for cloud computer generation (supposedly a massive build), if passed, will mean highly restricted internet access to 20,000 newly planned houses. The house builders are thinking of withdrawing their application as they think it may restrict the sale of the houses. This was announced on BBC news yesterday afternoon. :noidea:

Data centres use huge amounts of energy, but we need to keep things in perspective.

Let's consider something like the Microsoft Azure platform. It's the backbone to many business applications and data storage solutions. Consider a fairly small to medium sized business that needs some computing power. Most of the time it doesn't need much but sometimes it needs huge amounts, like when crunching all the data to get it ready for reporting or whatever. That business has two options these days. 1. they can build their own infrastructure, powerful enough to manage peak demands. All that computing power uses a lot of energy just for itself, but it also gets hot, so it needs its own aircon to keep it cool. Huge amounts of energy consumed, even though most of the time you're only using maybe 10% of it's capacity.

Option 2. Have a minimal server room, and move all the heavy stuff to the cloud. With Azure, you can spin up a virtual server in seconds, use the huge amount of computing power for the heavy task, then wind it down. Those same resources might get allocated by another business later the same day. So in effect, what's happening is the computing power is being shared, rather than everyone having their own.

So headlines about a data centre using as much power as 200k homes are very click baity. It's probably true. But take the data centres away, so every business has to have as much computing power as it needs on site, even if most of the time it's barely using it, and the power demands become suddenly much higher.

It is also worth noting that everyone in the computer industry, both hardware and software, is very aware of the energy demands, and are working to improve efficiency. Software and hardware in the cloud doesn't depend on the consumer to update it.

To be fair developers whinge and whine about just about everything. There’s always “issues” over water, data, power… it never stop the home being built. Data is only going to need more and more as it expands, I doubt very much, in fact I am certain, that it will hold anything up or be restricted in any way.

I should imagine it's more energy efficient to have a few large data centres than each individual business having a smaller version of their own. When I was working we had one or more computer rooms per office block, air conditioned and some had water cooling. Our computers were much more power hungry. Worse still we had halon fire extinguisher systems which I think are banned now.

I put developers in second place behind energy companies for being money grabbing, as soon as profit drops below a certain level they walk off site and wait until things improve.
They buy up large chunks of land and sit on them for years and wait until they can get planning for higher and higher density.

You will never solve the housing problems by building houses, or make housing cheaper.
The developers wont allow it to happen.

You should read about Woking and the mess they've got themselves into. Tory council created a local plan and lord knows how many supplemental docs for planning. Several big towers are built with promises to developers and restricting building outward into greenbelt. All good (apart from people not liking it at all and horrendous debt).
Tories get thrown out and we now have the yellows in power. They've decided on a Masterplan on top of that or to trump all the other stuff but they've removed a lot of transparency in making stuff that was openly discussed at council now decided behind closed doors if the executive. They've also puffed out their chests and said to developers 'haha, we're in power now and limiting builds to 8 storeys'. So the developers took their latest now rejected offering to the planning inspectorate who promptly said '28 storeys? Lovely! approved!' The developers then followed up telling the yellows if they ever released the Masterplan then they will sue the council for prevention of building massive buildings. The yellows' legal counsel has advised the council will lose.

They would have been better off linking the MP's to the turbines as they seem to generate a lot of hot air.
