It's a shame to lose a tree with a good spread on it @strongylodon, it leaves the garden looking very bare.

Are the cordyline stems still firm and green under the bark @strongylodon

I spent an hour on the balcony emptying out the hanging baskets & filling them with new compost. But gardening on a balcony has its own, unique problems - what do I do with all the old compost??? It's not as if I had flowerbeds I could cover with it to act like a mulch while it breaks down & becomes part of the soil! :rolleyespink: Can't be reused as it's 3 years old! That's how long it's been since I last changed the compost in the 5 or 6 I've done so far. Still got another 3 or 4 to do!

I also emptied out the old compost from lots of pots I had under the table on the balcony. They were full of Geraniums & Pelargoniums that the terribly hard frosts of December killed off. I just put them under the table till warmer weather came around.

Last Saturday I took a couple of bags of used compost round to my church's gardens. I used them to cover the soil I weeded. That's what I'll do with the other 3 bags that are bursting with old compost on the balcony.

Yesterday did some more weeding and cutting back old stems of the perennials and hubby started pruning the roses.

@pete, yes the cordys are firm and green under the bark so I am leaving them to see if any shoots emerge from the base but that could be some time.
