Tomato Growing Thread 2023

Hi folks, finally logged on after a few weeks, been a little fed up! Have read all the posts
on here regarding Mychoriza that I was reading before and still keen to try this year. Also keen to try some new-to- me varieties. Don't intend to sow for at least a month though do have heat, though no 'extra' light. Black Russian of some sort is likely as are my two starlwats Ddraig Goch, and Crimson Crush. I'm resisting the 'grow masses of varieties ' drug simply because I don't eat the things, raw at least! The Gardener loves them of course though I like them cooked, nothing Italian can be cooked without toms!!
The Mychoriza is going in all my composts (according to instructions) as that might create some interest (sadly lacking so far) though I haven't decided to shout at the Whitefly yet (another 2023 scheme)
I noticed a post or two regarding taking cuttings over Winter. All mine survived in the propagator but I lost all toms when I'd potted them up, unlike all other plant cuttings (salvias mostly) that I regularly take over Winter. Not sure why but possibly the atmosphere in conservatory was not warm enough for toms? Usually 9 degrees, though cold snaps early last year, I think?? Took very few this year of anything ( some S. confertiflora have survived though!!)

 

Bought a packet of honeycomb today shall grow a couple in the greenhouse for a few early ones.

 

And just how are you going to grow honeycomb? This is a tomato growing thread - you'll have to look elsewhere for a honey thread then make a bee line for it!

 

I guess i should try Y Ddraig Goch seeing as Im Welsh. Can’t seem to find much info on the size? Also, I guess its not blight resistant so would have to go into a green house rather than chance it outside?

Look on Medwyn Williams site (he has a great catalogue) which is where I found it. For me it was a good spherical shape, it is a site for folk who show, though I never do. The Gardener thinks it a good taste so it'll be the third year for me! Originally it was for the greenhouse, but the dreaded whitefly drove the plants outside! We put it right in front of our daily seats in case bad weather affected the plants and we had to do something!! The weather was good and Ddraig Goch just grew and grew!! Also Blight has not reared its ugly head although I now grow Crimson Crush which Medwyn says is Blight resistant. Anyway he also rekons the Ddraig Goch is pretty resistant, which I, so far, agree!! Am I asking for trouble claiming this???

 

Lol! Yeah found them on Medwyns site. I think I’ll give them a go, both in the greenhouse and maybe under a sheltered porch. I promise I wont send the boys round to yours if they get blight! I only grow blight resistant outdoors, however in wet S Wales, even the resistant ones still pick up a bit of blight, however its never fatal to the plants so long as I take action to remove the blighted leaves and occasional fruit

First sowing results. I'll sow the others at the end of March.

 

Good prices, especially as you can combine postage.

 

A week after sowing I've got the first tomato seedlings through.

 

I got 2 varieties from this seler too. Sowing in March.

 

Glad I've got others growing The Welsh Dragon. Don't really know why, but at least I know it grows well inside and outside.
Now ALL I want is a Tom that's resistant or even poisonous to Whitefly!!
Still not planted anything other than Sweet peas and Broad beans!!!
