Not much beats bark butter for a quick energy boost following a heavy snow storm. This male red-bellied woodpecker hardly waited for me to get back into the house before he pounced on the log. Notice the barbs on the end of its tongue meant to help it extract prey.

Thank you Sheal, my broken ankle is improving somewhat so I can get out and take some photos now and then. I am getting cabin fever from being indoors most of the winter.

Oh dear @hydrogardener, I hope your ankle mends soon. I understand your feelings of being housebound. I shattered my ankle and broke another bone in the leg at the same time - many years ago. Pinned together and three months in plaster wasn't fun.

I broke it in early October, get this, I broke it going out to feed a disabled skunk I had been feeding for several months. The grass was wet and I slipped, no good deed goes unpunished. After feeding the poor animal for five months I had to destroy it because its back leg hurt so bad it chewed it off. It broke my heart to destroy it. I tried to get the troopers to do it but they refused, they said it was on my property so I had to do it. I go back to the doctor on the 28th. of this month. He said the bones are lining up correctly but it is healing slowly, probably due to my age. As long as I can walk a few miles I can live with it. Now, it is like an old friend.;)

It's so easily done. My accident was similar to yours but I slipped on mud whilst working at a garden nursery. I was a couple of feet from a huge greenhouse and lucky not to go through the glass. I hope your appointment goes well on the 28th and you're back on your feet fully soon.

It's a shame about the skunk but you did well saving Rosie the fox, so a feather in your cap for that. :)

                    Well Sheal,

New York State gave me a hard time about treating Rosie. They said using ivemectin was illegal as it was off label. I replied the only warning on the label was not for human use. Then they said she should have been treated in captivity, not in the wild. I replied that I went to the people they license and recommend and did exactly what I was told to do, so it was not my problem it is their problem. I have not heard another word from them. Going forward, I will do what I think is best. Last week it was a crow, and I am helping a very young raccoon through her first tough winter. Bureaucrats are a pain, I won't say where. If I had listened to them in the first place Rosie would be history.

I'd be inclined to do the same as you @hydrogardener. I've rescued and tended animals and birds in the past but nothing recently.
