SBK is selective to a certain extent. I know it has no effect on bracken, nor does Roundup.

 

What are you using @Sheal , if its the stuff from garden centres its not great, I bought 5 litres of this a couple of years ago and it even kills ivy, something the other stuff doesn't.
The price appears to have gone through the roof though.

I find with glyphosate it doesn't last anywhere near as long as it's supposed to. I've found if I used it very soon after purchase, it's usually pretty effective. But I've also found that when I've had some left from a previous year, it's almost useless.

I've used glyphosate on bracken successfully. Trouble with bracken is it's certainly not a one time job. Even if you completely kill the bracken, it produces so many spores it's nigh on impossible to eradicate.

 

Some weeds do need repeated applications, strangely I think its usually the more basic or should I say primitive the plant is the more resistant they seem to be.

I've never found it to be less effective after a year or so, it does have recommended storage temperatures and it does say you are not to let it freeze.

Cant think of much that doesn't have a shelf life though so probably does deteriorate over time, but I think it probably has a shelf life of over a year, not actually looked to see if it has a use by date.

 

Yes, thanks @pete, that's what I bought after failing with the others. The first year saw most of it off and very little came up the second year. There's been none since. Being systemic it even killed the bracken 30ft away in the neighbouring horses field - to the right in the picture below. Good stuff!

Two successive years of spraying @Clueless 1 v2 and mine was completely gone using Gallup. The problem with Roundup in recent years is the change of chemicals used. It's a lot weaker now so I don't buy it.



The bracken was growing down into the back field and along the side of my bungalow, so quite a long stretch.

 

I'd forgotten about that @Sheal, I'm not sure "Roundup" actually contains Glyphosate any more.

 

I don't know either Pete, not having bought it since before the change.

 

I've noticed that Roundup seems now to just be a trade name - I think the retail ones often just contain vinegar or other natural acids

 

According to their website, roundup still contains glyphosate.

There seems to be lots of different recipes all going under the heading of Roundup.
It seems to be a case of buyer beware.

I'm trying to find the info on Amazon as to what the ingredients are in each type, but I'm blowed if I can find it.

It's interesting to see that some are acetic acid. So basically vinegar.
