WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY 2023

They are tubers @Loofah. Could remove mould and any soft parts then if there are still eyes you can plant them and see if they will grow.

 

I was just about to post the same @Dahlia Queen ..snap! I always sort through the tubers and removed any soft /mouldy bits. I just pot up and in some cases I have literally just stuck broken off tubers sections in the ground...they root so easily.

 

Morning @Upsydaisy. Was thinking about you yesterday when I planted out some broken bits from tubers. Difficult not to isn’t it and some make it. Made me laugh that you are probably doing the same. I did manage to break a large piece off a Mexican Star last year in about July time in the garden. Rushed into greenhouse and potted it in some very wet compost. It was cross but did survive so dahlias so have a will to live don’t they.

 

It's so addictive.....I'm the same with any broken off bits of plant ..note to self..Stop!!!

But I find the juicy looking bits of Dahlia tubers way to hard to resist!!

 

I was potting up some dahlias yesterday and one of them was easy to prise apart into two plants. I also had a rummage around in the bag they came in and potted up all the loose tuber pieces I found.

So it's not just me who does this haha.

I dont think broken off tubers actually grow, even if they produce roots, you need to have part of the old neck attached to each division because its around the neck that the new shoots appear from.

 

True or at least a very clean break from the main tuber. It has worked for me in the past.

 

My good lady pruned the roses today and I picked up the jaggy bits.

 

Yes, clearly none of us can help ourselves with the dahlias. Amazing how many grow from the broken off bits of tuber so let’s carry on and laugh as we are all doing it. You can never have too many dahlias can you

 

Nothing today it's raining and i always feel lazy on a Sunday.

 

Sowed some Zinnias this morning and will continue this afternoon.

 

I’m sowing yet more cosmos, found Antiquity and a few other packets so now trying to find room on the double staging or on the floor in Favolosa the greenhouse. Might sow morning glory too. I don’t have much luck with zinnia @Upsydaisy unless I sow direct. Despite using coir pots as they hate root disturbance as you know, they were a poor result for me. Had loads last year but only because I direct sowed in early May. Think the sunflowers will have to go in direct too as I have more dahlias to pot up too.

 

Vents on greenhouse opened in the sun, feels very much like spring and after a relatively mild week lots of new growth coming on.
Unloaded 40kg of grit from the car, then watered in greenhouse and covered some young plants in the greenhouse with fleece as sun shade. Dug up some snowdrops from overcrowded clumps. Picked some sprouting broccoli and lifted some leeks. Plus some weeding of course.
