Passport workers are going on strike for 5 weeks.
Must have plenty of money in order to take 5 weeks off unpaid.

We have now been without landline/internet since the beginning of Februuary. The last notification was all would be sorted by the 18th of March. Well, today is the 18th and guess what? ... no landline/Internet!!!! They did replace some rotten poles in the orchard. J had a message this morning saying there is a big problem in this area and they are working on it and they apologise. J saw a MEO truck go up the lane in the week but has not seen signs of anyone working anywhere. So, we operate off SIM cards in the mobile costing 15 Euros every 15 days ... but actually we have better service/speed so we will probably cancel MEO except for landline when they are up and running.

:yahoo: We have a landline and J will contact them to say we don't want the internet as we will continue with the sim card as it is faster and more reliable. He will have to phone or go to a shop and he hates talking on the phone more than I do! Apparently they gave us another 50 Euro credit so that is 75 total.

My world will never be the same again.

For background, I love Geoff Hamilton's books and buy all of them as they appear in charity shops. They are down to earth, highly readable and his style was refreshingly unapologetic and hands on. :dbgrtmb:

Fact number two. I don't have a telly and have never seen any of his programmes (or, in fact, any gardening programmes). Watching moving pictures is not my thing.

Well, last night I had a brainwave and found some youtube-d episodes of Geoff's programmes.

And he sounds totally wrong! The posh accent, the slightly patronising tone, the lack of any warmth and humour in his voice ...

My life has suddenly come to crossroads with only the cake and issue of Country Living received for Mothers' day to guide me from the shadowed valley towards the light. :th scifD36: ;)

What a good idea. During my time working in Council Social Services, there was always an issue with Carers and meals on wheels people being delayed as service users just wanted a good old chat. Day centres were also very popular provided people could get to them. Nowadays forums like this are a good way to let off steam, provided you have the necessary kit and knowledge that is.

Perhaps royal mail could learn a thing or two by looking abroad.

That's not how I remember him @Selleri so I found one youtube video and kind of agree with you, maybe my memories are rose tinted.

For a real down to earth chap with humour I always thought Geoffrey Smith the best Gardener's World presenter by a country mile

I went right off him when it was reported that he turned up to a function in a gold Rolls Royce. A hands-on gardener, yeah, right... It also became apparent that the real worker at Barnsdale was Ian Spence.

I suppose it provides a lifeline to elderly people living in the countryside, but the point was that this was something that the posties here did anyway before La Poste tried to make money out of the idea. They knew everyone on their round but LP in their wisdom shuffled them around and introduced temps who neither know nor care who they're delivering to. It's a sad sign of the times.

Bit of a shock this from the beeb. In my experience overeating is not something to be controlled by surgery. The craving will still be there. Its more a mental issue - a change in attitude to food - this is how to control weight. Ive been there and got the t shirt.

Seven British patients who travelled to Turkey for weight loss surgery died after operations there, a BBC investigation into the trend has found.

Others have returned home with serious health issues after having had gastric sleeve operations, during which more than 70% of the stomach is removed.

                        Education is key.

The NHS idea of a healthy diet is terrible. Trouble is, it's also the same advice that folks thought was right way back in the 1980s.

If you ask a load of people why protein is essential, I bet some won't even know what protein is or what foods to find it in, and I bet the majority of those that do know will say it's mostly for building muscle, so you hardly need it if you're happy with your muscles already. I bet hardly anyone will say it's essential for various functions of digestion, and I bet even fewer will tell you that it plays an important role in hormone regulation, including the triggering the release of leptin, the hormone that signals that you're full, while suppressing ghrelin, the hormone that signals hunger.
