The top of my road it 20 mph but only for a few hundred yards.

Most limits have been lowered now around here, 40s have become 30s and rarely get a chance to get above 50.
Even the nearest motorway is all variable speed limits and cameras, its made driving a real chore, you spend more time looking at the speedo and for cameras than you do actually looking where you are going and other road hazards.

Since our local authority has made a rule that anyone wanting to use the local tip has to make an appointment and give their vehicle registration number and address there has already been a serious spate of fly tipping. I told them it would be one of the consequences of bringing the rule in.

There have been instances of large piles of rubbish tipped on the actual road and not the verge. This has happened on some of the small, winding, country roads and it has spread far enough across the carriageway to prevent any large vehicle from passing it. It's going to cost the council a lot of money in removing it each time. One pile I saw looks as though a tipper truck had dumped it. That would only take a couple of seconds to do.

The councils of councils (why have one level when you can create two or more? :mute:) have introduced similar measures here. The reports in the local paper of incidences of fly tipping have increased accordingly. Are these people really so dim that they couldn't foresee it? :dunno: On the bright side, some tips are setting up mini recycling areas for users to buy anything put aside that can be re-used. What a revolutionary idea....our local tip in UK was doing that 40 years ago :roflol:

I prefer the booking idea at the tip, before that started you could queue for nearly an hour weekends to get in.
Now you can just drive straight in since the booking started, it's stopped the people who have just one bag of rubbish and seemed to spend half their lives there.
A big problem now is having to pay per bag for certain materials.

Most of the fly tipping around here is commercial and rogue rubbish collectors who wouldn't be allowed to use the household tip anyway.
Also the price of commercial tipping has risen massively so I'm told.

I'm paying a local company to take away a quantity of assorted waste, including rotted decking, leaky water butt, old electrical and electronic stuff. Admittedly not cheap, but easier than multiple trips to the tip. I get a document showing what's taken and where it's going; which is a private site that recycles more than the local councii does.

People leave all sorts of household items by the bins here, furniture, appliances, etc, and it is gone very quickly. Once or twice a week the Council comes and takes it away. When you buy new appliances, the seller is supposed to take the old away.

Always fed up with people who pile any old rubbish up against the bottle banks.
We have them in a car park to a shopping centre, but it's just bottles.

I watched a video last night about a UK driving instructor in New York, going out with a driving school there, and the NY instructor was explaining that the entire city of New York (not just the busy bits), is a 25 mph zone with 20 mph past schools. There were a lot of interesting differences between how they are taught in NY and the UK.
I'll post a link for anyone interested.
