Never really bothered about shurbs, always had small gardens and concentrated on cottage garden flowers. Now I've got an awkward bed at the back door that doesn't get much sun, and thought it would be easier to shove in a few wee shrubs instead of flowers. So far I've got a Daphne - which I'd never heard of before but it it does what it says it does then it wil be lovely. Anything else small and fragrant that likes shade? In the shade of the house, faces due east.

Azaleas will grow in shade, and they will give you some colour in the springtime.

When you say shade, how much shade? If it faces east it should get the morning sun at least, unless something else is in the way? I have a feeling you have more options than you might realise.

There's a 6ft fence quite near it but it does get sun for a short time through a gap. Also seems to be a bit prone to damp.

Some nice hostas and ferns perhaps?

Or for something more substantial, have you looked at fatsia japonica?

Sarcococca, kalmia and dwarf rhododendron should tend to your needs up there in the acidic soils of Scotland to go with the daphne. Make sure the azaleas are the hardy types, as there are a lot sold as houseplants

I like the Kalmia, never in my life heard of it before. Is it easy to buy here? And def a sarcococca too. Putting up a shed has drastically changed the levels of sunlight and forcing me to move a lot of things around. Always the same eh - you improve one thing and then find it's messed up three other things!
