Stupid holes :(

I don't know why new pots you buy these days have holes in their sides. I just watered a plant on my windowsill and it poured from the stupid hole like a waterfall all over the place

Does anyone know the best thing to plug them with ?

 

Whittle a suitable plug from a wine bottle cork, leaving a small stump. Push it in from the inside.

It will swell up to become watertight. Pinot Grigio goes well with Chlorophytum

 

Silicon would work.
I've never seen posts with holes like that, is it to hang it up.

 

There's usually a price tag threaded through it on a bit of plastic you have to cut off. I'm surprised you haven't seen them. All big terracotta pots seem to have them these days, they're in all the garden centres around here.

We tend to be sticky label people around here.
But you can never get them off cleanly.

I thought chewing gum or blue tack, but silicone is probably better!

 

I'm really sorry, I know it's no fun having to clean up an unexpected spillage, but I do find it hilarious.

Perhaps some junior design engineer sneaked it into the specification for their own amusement one Friday afternoon.

For a solution though, I think I'd just stick a bit of gorilla tape over the hole on the inside. I know over time the moisture will make it lose its stick, but by then the compost will be holding it in place.

 

Here you are look @pete, the holes I was talking about, they are in most pots around here now.





I don't understand why they have to be there just to hold a tag, it's daft, after you take the tag off the water pours out through them and sometimes they are low down so you can't fill the pot with compost. I don't know what idiot invented them

 

I'd be inclined to mention to the place you get these that you wont be buying any more because of the holes.
Perhaps they will then change their supplier.

 

I'd have to go around every garden centre within a 50 mile radius, it's only these you can get everywhere now. However I shall have a word with them in each garden centre as I visit there.

 

I dont buy that many pots of this type so maybe they are like that around here also.

I occasionally buy those Italian terracotta pots that are not frost proof for cacti, but other than that I'm mostly into boring plastic these days .

 

I have never seen that here. I have seen holes nearer the bottom for drainage though.

 

Looking at the hole closer up, it doesn't seem to have a function and almost looks like someone has made it afterwards. Sort of punched it through.

Perhaps it'd be good to ask in the store about it, and also to contact the manufacturer?

I have never seen that either. Or perhaps I have been too busy collecting bottle tops from Pinot Grigio to really pay close attention
