There is no purpose to them, except for holding the tag. The only pots without them are small teracotta ones, they are also in the glazed coloured pots.

It's going to be difficult getting the garden centres to change suppliers because there are several if not all of them putting these holes in their pots.

Maybe they make extra pots with the bits they cut out :noidea: . I'll have to take a look at the few terracotta pots we have left

I went to the Garden Center today and went up and down every aisle and didn't see one pot with such a hole. I didn't go through the giant ones on the outside but think they only have holes in the base.

Based on your photo @Michael Hewett , I found a similar pot on Woodlodge website and indeed it has a hole!

I have asked them for the reason and will report back once they reply.

In the meantime, shall we place bets?

There's a big hole in each of them John, at the top. :heehee:
The pots with label holes in the side are really strange. Going to a big nursery tomorrow, I'll have a look if it is a common feature.

I wonder if these pots are intended to have a plastic flower pot put inside them and not intend for direct planting.

Sme of them are huge @pete and are heavy stonewear. They all have drainage holes in the base. They're definitely for planting in directly.

If you look at the manufacturers facebook page you will see loads of these type of pots with a hole.

                        woodlodge.jpg

I would not be surprised if it was the G'C chains that initiated this. A grower certainly would not want a hole at the top of the pot. I would say these types of pots in the past just had a sticky barcode label, which will deteriorate in the weather making it difficult for the item to be scanned at checkout, anything to make there life more easy, just my opinion.
