Tomato Growing Thread 2023

I kept a plant going year before last but it was a very scrawny leggy thing by this time of the year so it was decapitated and rerooted yet again to fruit in summer.

 

I tried to keep a Red Robin micro over the winter. It did okay at first, sending out new leaves, but slowly lost vigour and expired.

 

Repotted 22 plants into 500ml yoghurt pots saved over the last year. 18 for inside including a few spare ones and 4 crimson crush for outside. Hopefully the weather picks up at the start of may.....

 

I'm waiting on the month of May to turn up with, hopefully, some warmer & sunnier weather than we have had for the greater part of April this year. It the month for flowers after a windy March & a showery April all of which come before a "flamin'" June!

If we have a warm summer then I hope my tomatoes will produce a good crop again this year. Last year's crop didn't happen after they were struck down by wilt!

 

Nets on the first flowers for the first batch. Middle batch out in greenhouse during the day. Cold snap tomorrow and Tuesday nights so everything is coming back inside until Wednesday.

 

I'll have to bring mine in for a few days

 

I'm hoping, just hoping that we are missing out spring this year and will at some point move directly to summer, if we dont its going to be a washout.

whats do you do ? to release the seed capsule from the top of the new plant that has sprouted ?
so annoying as I only had 10 seeds of the variety

 

Rub a drop of saliva onto the stuck "helmets". The enzymes will help soften the shell and the saliva will help keep it moist.

 

I lick my fingers, then touch the clingy seed to soften the coat, after a few seconds it should be soft enough to gently prise off the seedling.

 

I upturn a small plastic clear toothpaste lid over them after spraying with water.
I always think it's a sign that the seed was not deep enough.

It happens with lots of seeds, some sort themselves out others don't.

 

Not a problem I've really had to deal with, if one is stuck on in a day or two they tend to fall off naturally. I'd never thought of doing anything more that perhaps pulling them off but can't recall having done it on more than a couple of occasions.
