I bought one and planted it in May last year in my front garden, I live in the North of England South facing front garden.
I lost it over winter, it was around 3 ft tall planted in free draining soil.
My understanding is these are very frost hardy.
I'm thinking of getting another one will I get away with it if I take some precautions and if so is fleece wrap and straw at its base sufficient over winter, would I need to keep it in a pot for a couple of years.
Or am I better going for an alternative ?
    TIA

Hi have a japanese maple and in winter and spring it looks dead it's similar with japanese larch in the the winter they are a bit stark, with bare branches, and pale yellow twigs. Some people think they are dead but if you . Look more closely. Each branch has little balls about the size and colour of peppercorns. Wait and watch

Although larches are conifers they are deciduous, losing their needles around November and with me greening up again around now.
If you get some cold weather in autumn they will colour up nicely.

Seems dead. I've not removed it yet just in case, but absolutely no growth or any sign of buds or greening up.

        I'd wait another month personally.
I think there is still time give the bark a scratch low down and see if it is green underneath.
