The BBC broadcast the Queen's coronation in black and white only! I remember that coronation quite clearly. :)

I made an airfix model of the Coronation coach when I was a kid, the real thing looks in better nick than mine

I thought the coach they used to arrive at the abbey was a much better one than that gold plated thing they left in.
It looks really OTT IMO, I'm surprised they would even want to be seen dead in such an awful thing.

My first memory as a child is sitting in a pushchair waving a flag, when I told mother many years ago, she was surprised as I was only young, seems there was some sort of parade went on in Leicester where I was born, not sure it was on the actual Coronation Day.

Us kids in our street were allowed to play in our shed while grown ups listened to it on the radio indoors back in 1953,
I was 10 years old then,

It seems the police arrested a load of protesters today.

'Something out of a police state': Anti-monarchy protesters arrested ahead of King Charles' coronation | CNN

Good. I'm glad. I have no problem at all with people who don't like the idea of monarchy. That's their personal opinion. I also have no problem with people who feel they want to express that opinion peacefully and respectfully. I do however have a problem with people that wish to force their opinion on others, and people who don't respect the notion of picking the right time to express their views.

My only thoughts are that I wish the police would act just as quickly when protesters are blocking motorways or main roads and causing ordinary people real problems.
They seem to have the powers to do so, but mostly choose not to bother.

I must admit I struggle to respect the police these days. They rarely seem to do anything, and even if they do, they often make a pig's ear of it. I remember once being the first person to help after a hit and run. The bloke was laid out unconscious oozing blood from his head, and several witnesses actually saw the accident happen and the car speed off. The coppers were useless. First they wanted to drag him out of the road. I had to physically block them from doing so while trying to explain we don't know the full extent of his injuries. As the saga unfolded, they made one bad decision after another and I had to explain why it was wrong. By the time the ambulance arrived the coppers were literally just doing as I told them, fully accepting that a civilian with minimal first aid training knew vastly more than them. But the best bit, after the ambulance crew took over the care of the casualty, the coppers were satisfied that their job was done. I asked them, do they not want to take witness statements? They replied there was nothing to investigate, a drunk man had simply fallen on his face. This despite him being laid on his back with his limbs sprawled, and several witnesses having seen him get run over. This is just one example of a combination of incompetence and negligence I've seen.

But back on point, all that said, I do think at times they're in a difficult situation. If they arrest protesters, they will cry foul, we have a legal right to peaceful protest in the UK after all, and that's how it should be if we don't want to be like China or Russia. But on the other hand if protesters are ruining people's day en masse and they don't get arrested, then the coppers get blamed for doing nothing.

Two copper were involved when my dad died 20 yrs ago, they had no dealings in his death BTW.
But the main concern afterwards of their superior officer, after questioning me immediately after he arrived on the scene, was to determine if they were in the clear regarding getting prosecuted for not doing their job properly.

All the focus today was rightly on the ceremony, and how well it went, along with all the hard work and endless rehearsals of the very many participants, including of course the armed forces and others on parade.

Kudos to all those involved. They did a fantastic job.

But I have no doubt there were many more unsung heroes behind the scenes. Air traffic control for example, keeping the airspace clear. And I have no doubt the intelligence services were working extra hard, and I suspect there were probably more than a few marksmen and such in strategic positions out of sight just in case anyone felt like trying something sinister. And no doubt many others in many different roles behind the scenes. Kudos to those folks too.

I'm bored with all the repeats. I tend to pop in to BBC news every so often during the night and early morning but the coronation was on a non-stop repeat. :noidea:

I watched one of the repeats last night, two minutes to sum up the whole day. That was just right for me.

I was shocked to see some protesters being arrested as soon as they arrived before they even got their banners out. I wonder how that is viewed in Russia?

Street parties are going on here, I'll pop to our village one just to see the road closed, that doesn't happen often. I get the feeling it's more to do with families and entertaining little kids.
