I always do some kind of firming before sowing seeds, maybe not walking on but I often use the head of a rake.

Well they’re in, let’s wait and see if all my hard work with the sieve pays off.

We make carrot & parsnip compost very similar to the mix mentioned in the link. Instead of using ordinary sand we use silica sand which is considerably more finer and tends to be used in the glass and blasting industry.

One of my customers grows, carrots, parsnips, potatoes and onions for show, which he regularly wins.

Joe Atherton holds the record for the longest carrot at over 6m in length.

I opened a packet of stump rooted carrots to sow, I reckon there was no more than 30 seeds in the packet, they came free with a magazine, but I will be watching what I buy and try to see how many seeds there are in future. There were not enough seeds to do one row a metre long.

        Were they F1 hybrids.
Or maybe just special packets made up for the free gifts.

Not hybrids Pete, the Eskimoo I sowed were F1 and there were plenty of those seeds, they were a stump rooted one, perhaps aimed at folk who grow in containers, hence fewer seeds. I have noticed some suppliers are selling packets with fewer seeds in, just need to be aware so you can judge, if they are good value and if they are what you want I guess.

Well at least most to have the average contents printed on the packet these days.

First couple of carrots harvested today, not winning any competitions but look good and taste great. The rest still have a while to go. Thanks for all the advise! IMG_8989.jpeg
