How many different makes of EV cars can you get for under 30k ? and will they be cheaper in 7 months time when the post Brexit deal kicks in. From 2024, the Brexit rule requires that 45% of an electric vehicle’s parts by value have to be sourced in the UK or EU if it is to be sold on the other side of the Channel without a 10% trade tariff.

Vauxhall have come out and said if the UK and EU do not renegotiate the post Brexit deal, a 10% tariff on the final value of a new EV cost could result in transition to EV cars being knocked off course. An electric Vauxhall Corsa starts at £32,000 that will increase by 10% in 7 months time, that's not affordable to me.
Ford and Jaguar Land Rover agree with Stellantis along with the German automakers that the post Brexit deal needs to be delayed or renegotiated.

German automakers urge postponing post-Brexit rules on EVs | Automotive News Europe (autonews.com)

The collapse of Britishvolt has not helped as the battery can be the most expensive single component of an EV and now with recharge industries not purchasing the land in Blythe before the dead line, it's looking less likely the UK will be manufacturing batteries anytime soon.

I do agree on the second hand market though, second hand EV's are getting more affordable, they are the fastest depreciating sector loosing 47% of it's value in less than three years, according to Autovista. Cash price for a second hand electric Corsa with under 10k miles for £18,190 backs it up.

My choice would be the Mazda. Having owned two of them (MX5 and Mazda2), I would have no qualms about buying another. I can’t answer for the future, it hasn’t happened yet :)

The Mazda is a nice motor, the Mazda 2 would tick all the boxes for me starting at £17,700 for a MHEV.

This government promised to build 40 new hospitals by 2030 and have not even started on 33 of them. For me, that is more a priority than the infrastructure for EV'S but all this government has done is talk, talk, talk.

To be fair, successive governments make wild promises it doesn't keep!
If government got out of the way and stopped interfering with industry and education I'm convinced they'd be in much better shape

I'd pay the extra half mil and get the RHD version.

They were just on the news talking about charging EVs.
Seems its still pretty dodgy trying to get charged on motorways when doing long trips.

Chargers not working or not enough of them seems to be the problem.

Just wondering, but if you grab a charger then wander off to get a meal for an hour or so are you actually blocking someone else from using a charger once your vehicle is charged.

They also seem to take up a lot of space, I forsee things getting even worse as more people get EVs.
Of course at some point they will be stripping out normal fuel areas at motorway services at some point freeing up space but that could be a long time off.

In the case of Volkswagen (the first one I looked at), the app tells you where the nearest charge station is, and its availability in real time. If it’s not working, it isn’t available. The app also tells you when the charge is complete. It’s just etiquette not to overstay, consider others. Mind you, I’ve gone to fill up only to find that the bloke in front of me (who I’ve queued behind) has decided to do his weekly shop while he’s at it
I imagine though that most EV owners will only be travelling short distances, as now, and many of those will invest in a home charger. For those that can’t install a home charger, it’s just a case of finding the nearest charging point, same as now for fuel.

I have enough trouble getting in and out of a normal car. If they had an open top version I think I could manage it

We haven't the infrastructure capable of supplying a load of EV charging points. There's little plan to install and build and what plans there are will be one of the first to get cut.
I can see gridlock around motorway services due to EV charging

It must be slightly worrying if you're on a long journey and can't get on a charger though.
I know most people will probably be able to jog along ok with just a home charger but if you do have to make occasional longer journeys might be easier to hire a nonEV at this stage.

I know I would have to keep topping the thing up at every opportunity just incase I got caught out.

You, me and lots of others too Pete. I think as time goes on, and with more charge stations coming online, folks will become more confident. Thing is, as I implied earlier, there’s not going to be this great rush to switch to EV’s, ICE cars will continue to be bought and sold long after the 2030 deadline, probably well into the 40’s. Of course, the availability of spare parts, petrol/diesel will be a factor. At the moment, I won’t be buying one (EV) as I need a good tow car, and TBH, I don’t know how I’ve got left so investing some £50,000 would be silly, but further down the line when I don’t need a tow car, yes I would buy one.
I’m sure the whole EV thing will sort itself out in the end.
