Tomato Growing Thread 2023

Well a greenhouse glazed with plastic is going to be a lot lighter, so unless its well fixed down a plastic one, in theory, would be more likely to get blown away in a gale.

 

Around the outside: Bloody Butcher, BlackTruffle/Santiam Sunrise, Pineapple Fog/Reinhart Kraft's Purple Sugar, Isis Candy/ Zauberstab, Gobstopper/Kazachka, Petite Chocolate/Black Hole Sun, Haley's Sweet Mystery/ Der Kleine Doctor, Miss Kennedy/ Anna's Multiflora. In the middle: Moment Micro, Dean's Jack in the Box, Dark Stripe Micro, Fat Frog, Minibel. In my conservatory, I have Cherry Roma and Sci-Fi. Dwarf Wild Fred, Gerald's Mystery and Lost Marbles are in a friend's greenhouse.

 

That is incredibly organised @eatenbyweasels ! I wish I had my pathetic set of plants looking as good

 

It's all going suspiciously well. I'm waiting for the greenhouse to be carried off by a hurricane or something.

Yesterday I finally repotted my tomato seedling that have been languishing in the kitchen the last couple of weeks! I put them in some deep yoghurt pots burying half the length of the stems. I only hope they grow & I can plant them out next month! I've put them in the mini-greenhouse on the balcony table but they will only be able to stay there till the end of the month as I have to take it down & the table it is on as well to make room for the tomato growbags & to give me more space on the balcony! I can hardly move at present!

Who else can’t wait for their first ‘proper’ home grown tomato! I’ve been buying tescos ‘finest’ san Marzano…a little underwhelming if I’m honest. However, preferable to the crappy offerings in their cheaper offerings…tasteless and not worth bothering with!

 

The pots in the middle will be going outside or to my son's house and the courgettes will be planted out soon, so I'll be able to access the remainder.

 

Back-up side shoots potted up, plus three late arrivals from discarded sowings. I've had some strangely long germination times this year.

Do the side shoots root easily?

 

Yes, they're very easy. Poke them into wet compost or stand them in water for a few days. I don't think they ever make quite the big root structure of a sown plant, but if, like me, you might only have one or two seeds of a variety to begin with, it's an excellent way of getting multiple plants from a single seed.

PS. I don't think it works well with determinate varieties, as each shoot of a determinate is programmed to terminate with a single truss.

Toms in the greenhouse are finally starting to get a move on, they've put on a few inches in the last few days.



First fruits have set on the Sungold which is no surprise.



We are back to single figure temperatures from tonight and all the way to June, I suppose this is going to slam the breaks on the growth again, really hope June warms up and fast.
