Hey there, I see Aldi has wisteria for sale right now, about a meter high for £19.99.
I really would love to grow one of these wonderful spectacular plants, however, I'll be moving home before the end of the year so my question is, Can wisteria be grown successfully in a container making it portable in the near future?

Yes, short term, I dont see why not, but will need planting out at some point in the future.

There is a house near me which has a wisteria in a large tub against the front of the house. The tub is a big one, like a 3'x3'x3' cube. Full of soil, and also the now quite large plant, that tub ain't moving anywhere soon, lol, it must be extremely heavy.

I keep watching this wisteria from afar because I read that, although you can keep them in pots, eventually they will start to suffer, and that they really need to go in the ground.

However, I've been watching it now for like the past 6 years or so and it keeps coming back each year better than the last. It has been trained against some wall fixings and I'd say it's pretty much there for the long term now. It is quite impressive.

When will it start to suffer, if at all? Certainly no signs yet. But one thing's for certain, I've seen some huge wisteria, these things can get very big with thick trunks.

I'm pretty certain that that wisteria in that pot that I keep watching will struggle to match the outstanding beauty of a mature ground grown one. Eventually, even though that pot is big, I'm certain it will begin to impede it's growth.

I bet it needed some intense watering and feeding last summer in the heat.

Didn't we all! Lol. I took some extreme "watering" last year, sat outside the pub, lol.

We went past our old house the other day and the kids and wife all went 'oooh the wisteria looks amazing!' which it did. It looks great but I sure as heck don't miss having to prune it twice a year!

I've got a tiny one against my back garden fence. Like a lot of garden plants this spring I didn't expect it to survive that murderous winter period that wiped out so many plants.

But miraculously the skinny little wimpy thing is sprouting it's spring leaves!! If this thing gets going I'm going to have to rein it in regularly, otherwise, fast forward a few years and I can wave bye bye to my fence! Lol.
