There are parts of the population, many motorists and even members here, who I believe, if you were back at the transition from horse to automobile, would be saying they will never catch on. You have to go out and search for fuel, buying it at the chemist's shop in gallon cans. They are difficult to start, keep breaking down and are prohibitively expensive.

I will be 75 in just over a month but I welcome technology with open arms. Fossil fuel-powered vehicles are dead, they just don't know it yet. Yes, just over 100 years on, some people still have horses, but they are no longer a viable form of transport.

I think it also comes down to what you like.
I still drive a manual, lots of people will be driving automatics, although I have driven them, can't say I want to change.
Also things like stop start, I just don't want it.

You don't need a high tech vehicle to do that in London. The driving is like that all the time! :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

Weight and cost being two main reasons and reliability concerns being a third.

There is more to a solar panel than a panoramic roof or sheet metal roof, so that is bound to add weight; solar panels would have to be bespoke to contend with the flexing, vibration and environmental pressures that it would have to be expected to stand up to, so the cost would be higher than a standard size/shape configuration that you would attach to your home. All for 3 maybe 4 miles on a really sunny day?

That is indeed part of it - when you are spending out so much money, you at least have to like the thing you are buying/leasing for a start.

It also depends on the execution by the manufacturer - for example, you mention stop/start and that in the Jag wasn't great even when it did work; it failed on mine after a couple of months of having the car and never worked again, and I didn't miss it. Having changed to a petrol Volvo in the past couple of weeks, their execution of stop/start is vastly superior to Jaguars and it is barely noticeable that it is even doing its thing at times. My hope now is that their automatic wipers are a similar improvement as they were nothing short of awful on the Jag and I would much rather have had bog standard wipers!

I drove manual transmissions for just over 25 years before getting my first automatic. I then drove automatics for the next 25 years. Six years ago I went back to a manual and I am now on my second manual. I have gotten used to the manual again but I don't like them. Fine on the open road but as soon as you get in queueing traffic they are a nightmare. I really fancy the new Honda Jazz hybrid. It has an electric transmission and for the most part, the engine just charges the battery. Also gives some assist at high speeds but there is no clutch or gearbox. A not dissimilar configuration to a diesel-electric locomotive.

I think that in 20 years time, folks will look back and wonder what all the fuss was about.

I spotted something surprising today. A new hospital department has been built on the Inverness University campus close to the hospital. The small car park there had two car charging places, neither of which was in use. The department opened last month so I wonder how long it will be before drivers not visiting the department discover them.

I hope this is the case - however, to get there, we are going to have to invest heavily in infrastructure as it simply isn't there at the moment; and I am not talking only about charging points by the way.

My Volvo has automatic wipers but that is one of the things I turned off first. The manual settings are good enough for me. Press down for a single wipe, one up for intermittent wipe, another one up for regular continuous and a further one up for fast wipe. I rarely use the fast except in very heavy rain, or steady rain whilst on the motorway in traffic, and all are excellent.

Are the auto wipers a bit useless on the Volvo then? It hasn't rained since I got mine, so yet to find out. Does yours have the wipers where the water comes out of the wiper blade rather than a jet on the arm or bonnet?

I’m sure folks were sceptical when ICE powered cars were first pioneered. Same with aircraft, more recently the Covid vaccine. I dare say history is littered with things that were considered impossible/impractical, yet here we are. The thing to remember is that no one is being forced to ‘jump’ for at least ten years in my estimation, plenty of time to adjust/decide when one wants to get onboard. Range is being extended, prices are dropping, battery technology will no doubt advance. When there is a demand, the market usually latches on.

I think the difference is that when ICE cars were introduced they were a new innovation and likewise aircraft.

What's actually happening now is we are being slowly forced/ coerced into dumping something that works perfectly well and change to something that doesn't, regarding usability and cost.

Indeed, the technology is moving fast and the hurdles are becoming a lot less - I do worry about the infrastructure more in terms of generation capacity than anything, not least as I know we have at least two sites at work that cannot be electrified at all, and others that can only get sufficient power for 50-60% of the fleet to be BEV. Extrapolate that out to the whole country wanting public transport, council vehicles, ambulances, fire service vehicles and so on being electric and that is a shed load of power that we are simply not generating.

We can just bung up a few more windmills, they seem to be the answer to all our energy problems if you listen to the "experts" and the greens.
