Tomato Growing Thread 2023

I did kind of convert it lol it actually said 4 or 5 litres which is roughly a gallon. Sorry for cibfudion

 

Only once in the 20 odd years I've grown toms on our balcony have I had blight & that was probably due to the spores being on my clothes. It didn't occur to me to change them after returning from the allotment where I had been disposing of toms dying of blight.

 

@LukeMB , I hope your plants are recovering from whatever was wrong with them.

My seedlings have made a lot of progress since this heatwave began! Toms really appreciate the hotter weather! In a couple of weeks time I will be able to put them in the growbags!

 

I think you can still get copper fungicide , not quite the same as Bordeaux mixture, but I've used it in the past for late blight.

 

LHS plant is more lush, from being in the greenhouse, but both are producing well.

 

My most difficult plant is cherokee purple, it starts making growing tips on the ends of trusses and even leaves. Most confusing when trying to side shoot it. Last year I inadvertently topped it due to this, thankfully I had already let it go to two stems, then it obligingly threw out another sideshoot in quick order and I was able to train that one up again. Would this make it semi determinate? It keeps growing throughout the season. It's not like sungold for example which is very easy to train and sideshoot

 

I've never grown CP, Hanglow but I often see leaf growth on the tips of trusses. I just nip them off as I want the plant to concentrate on swelling and ripening the truss. Personally, I wouldn't class this as semi-determinism. I don't know if super-indeterminism could be a definition. I will make inquiries of the Facebook group tomato geeks.

 

Here's a chap dealing with exactly this issue. He doesn't have a name for them either but he chops them off without hesitation.

 

Thanks @eatenbyweasels . It was my favourite for flavour last year, not the most productive but consistently produced flavoursome tomatoes. This was the last one to ripen for me

Guys I have question. How long does it take for the tomato to START forming once flower bloomed? I have lots of flowers now, many still need to bloom, but pretty much only my gardeners delight formed fruit. Some flowers bloomed two weeks ago and they don't change in tomatoes. All my beef tomatoes not having formed one fruit. Is it normal?
