Aww Freddy your post brings back very happy memories of when my hubs and I camped up in the same area. It must be around 40 years go now , we pitched our tent right on the waters edge, probably not allowed to do so now. I can remember sleeping with the tent 'doors' open and watching and listening to the water's gentle lapping sound. Never forgot that holiday. Thank you for taking me back there.
I understand that feeling of the past @Upsydaisy. I was in Gloucester the year before last, and visited the remains of the priory where Aethelflaed, Alfred's daughter was buried - an amazing woman! I love that era.
Having my car serviced today so I'm over at Paddock Wood, where I used to work, and just had a wander up the hill in the orchards. Pictures might be a bit dodgy, used my phone camera and I've not got my glasses with me Apples and pears, in the last picture you can see how the new housing is slowly encroaching, not sure how many years this lot has left.
A nice stroll on a nice day Pete. New builds wouldn't be so bad if they were built in different styles and finishes.
We only live 30 miles away from Keswick, yet we hardly ever venture through anymore, packed. The last Bank Holiday, we headed off to Keswick only to do a U-turn and head to the north end of Bassenthwaite Lake, peaceful walk and refreshments, not a bad day after all.
I agree, Keswick is always busy. Just to clarify, my previous comments related to the Lake District in general, just stunning.
Enjoyed a lovely day out over on the I O W yesterday with some old school friends, one of whom has lived there for several years now. After meeting up and a coffee stop off in Cowes we headed to Ryde to get the train to Shanklin. Lunch was taken in the garden of The Old Thatch Tea Shop. https://www.oldthatchteashop.co.uk/about_us With it's beautiful Fairy Garden. We ended our day on the beach for a couple of hours reminiscing over our past adventures on the island way back in our teens. Taxi to the station.....back to Ryde and as we were cutting a bit fine for catching our return ferry it was another taxi to Cowes.
As it was so hot during the day in the Lake District I went out for my walks before the sun was up - it was much too hot to do any strenuous walk after 9 a.m. On my way to Castlerigg Stone Circle my way was barred by sheep just waking up and I needed to go through that gate It was quite light but the sun was still asleep But woke up whilst I was walking back
I doubt it ,I first went years back and it seemed pretty unchanged it the areas we were in. My parents use to go there too and always liked it simply because it kept it's charm. It's another place that we're fortunate to have on our doorstep.
Upsy, we often shopped in Shanklin and visited the Garden Center in Ryde often, I loved the IoW and had we not moved here would have bought a cottage there (would not have lived permanently in our apartment in Bonchurch because I would need a garden and not communal gardens. Our apartment was the left half of the verandah.
