That contradicts what Volvo say in their brochure and what they said to me at the truck fest. Volvo trucks are fitted with 2 to 6 batteries with a range from 100km to 420km, the artic's will tend be the ones fitted with 6 batteries and are only capable of doing up to 300km. So if they have a Volvo truck that is capable of doing 250 miles it is certainly not that truck in the picture, the truck with a range of 420km has a gross weight of 16.7 ton, which is basically a small bin truck, specs below. For that truck in the picture to be able to do 250 miles then it must be a one off and will have to be fitted with 8 batteries which will weigh 4.2 ton, I just can't see how they could fit 8 batteries on the tractor unit though.

That would explain it, strange that the very same truck, Volvo FM they are claiming it is capable of doing 250 miles before charging, yet the brochure I have and the website has the very same truck, same payload but the range is up to 300km.

What effect would all the extra weight of trucks have on the road surface - more potholes, more vehicle damage because of it.

I was going to say about the cost of more road maintenance but they don't do any nowadays! :wallbanging:

Even though there is an ongoing consultation about increasing the gross weight of HGV;s, the 44ton gross weight of an artic is unlikely to be increased.

Since Saturday I have had a load of Peat, bark, PAS 100 and spent mushroom compost the payload weight between them was 26.5 ton to 27.8 ton. The 2 trucks that had walking floor trailers both had a payload of roughly 26.5 ton but the 2 tippers had a payload of nearly 28 ton. If all these trucks were electric with a range of 250 miles then you can deduct roughly 4.5 ton payload. The loads of peat and bark were 85 and 80 cube, the PAS 100 and spent mushroom were roughly 50 cube loads.

The pot holes round here are getting that big, when it rains next I am going to get my fishing tackle out.

It's all planned in - more read wearing so more potholes. The electric car goes over these big holes thereby cracking a wheel to keep the vehicle in place while the battery drops out and explodes. The resultant heating of the road surface melts the tarmac back to a smooth finish, safe for subsequent drivers :)

When trucks started to having computers telling the driver when it change gear to save on fuel we all had to learn how to do it, when we were doing a rural run which had some very steep hills to go up & down some hill you had to get a good run up in which to get up the hill ( if you missed a gear & stopped it was then rev to bottom and start up in low gear all the way) so flat out at the bottom (not breaking seed limit as you could get to that but you had to get as much speed as pos) the computer then bleeps and says change up change up!!! i allway said to that computer " there's a ##### sleep hill ahead please shut up! if i change up to a higher gear i would then have to change down 2 gears with in minutes after computer talk, then we would get it in the neck from manger for high fuel use, so 1 day the manger came we me and we done 2 runs same lorry+trailar+load, 1 doing computer way and 1 doing it drivers way, he then down loaded info from computer and which 1 used less fuel, it was the driver run as driver could see road ahead, computer can be good but also a pain in the back side

If you read the entire press release I linked to it says they will do 250 miles per day but further down it says:
The truck has been specified to meet the needs of a specific application, being equipped with five batteries, which allows for a range of up to 250km dependent on operational, driving and environmental conditions. When specified with the maximum six batteries, an FM Electric is typically capable of travelling up to 300km on a full charge.
Maybe someone somewhere have got their miles and kilometers mixed up.

I wonder if it was a genuine mistake or purposely miss leading the public.

Scotland's first electric HGV starts making trips

I have been told that Chivas Brothers and the Japanese company that owns the laphroaig whiskey will have an exemption to carry on extracting and burning peat in the making of whiskey, I think both of them are investing in the restoration of other degraded bogs though.

The thing is, five trips are more or less 250 miles so that part is correct. Perhaps the fact the truck is only half loaded, weightwise, explains the increased range. The km figures Volvo states will be for a fully laden trailer.
Oh, and being a pedantic Scot, Laphroaig is whisky, not whiskey. Whiskey (with an 'e') refers to grain spirits distilled in Ireland and the United States. Whisky (with no 'e') refers to Scottish, Canadian, or Japanese grain spirits.

                    I see,
The mining of battery-grade lithium carbonate - a key component in electric cars - has been announced in Cornwall.

The joint venture between china clay company Imerys and British Lithium aims to operate the UK's "leading lithium hub" within five years.

Their target is to supply 500,000 electric cars with the component per year by the end of the decade.

The development, in the St Austell area, could potentially create at least 300 direct jobs, the companies said.

Have not been up to date in reading all opinions. But, this should not be mandatory in the least. it should be only a choice.

I don't think it has anything to do with China. Imerys is a French company that acquired English China Clays over 20 years ago. Imerys have recently purchased an 80% stake in British Lithium and will make Imerys the main producer of Lithium in Europe.
