Tomato Growing Thread 2023

I think we all do, you just have to give the flowers a flick.
I do the same with peppers.
You actually see the pollen drop with them.

 

I've got a lot of catching up to do

 

Mine just get agitated when I move them round the support string and sideshoot them. I did have some not set due to the heat in early june, they got frazzled as it was hitting 50c in the converted shed. But they've recovered now.

one of my bloody butchers is starting to blush. Last year it was my earliest with 120 days from sowing 63 days from transplant. this year it is 118 days from sowing and 65 days from transplant.

Had a bit of a rush on today .. we were warned about heavy rain/ hailstones and thunder yesterday, but we usually miss it where we live, so.... when I heard the thunder I was out in a flash "as quick as my walking stick would take me" with ready-cut fleece in one hand and clothes pegs clipped to my blouse so I could peg fleece loosely around my tomatoes plants. LOL I was laughing most of the time thinking - hope the neighbours don't see me!

 

Is that a real tortoise?

Dont want to seem negative, but the plants look a bit exposed perched up on those bricks, a strong gusty wind could blow them over, especially with the fleece wrapped around them.

 

Thanks for the advice Pete, I originally put them up on bricks as I couldn't bend down to tend to them when they were small plants due to my vertigo. Now they are taller though, it does makes sense to put them at ground level.
As for the wind catching my tomatoes? -it hardly ever reaches this side of the garden as the conifers get all the bashings.

Moving the bricks will be my husbands job once I can drag him away from the sport on tele.

After only 2 weeks in the growbags my plants are already growing stronger than at any moment since they germinated! The few trusses on the self-sown plant are rapidly fatting up! They will never get very big as I suspect they are from a 'Gardeners Delight' seed that I somehow mixed into some compost when I was repotting some plants in about April. We will see eventually if I'm right or whether it's from some other variety.

Tomatoes are fine thanks Balc, the bricks were removed and the fleece protected the plants from 10mins of heavy hailstones during the night. I removed fleece the next morning and I could practically hear them giving a sign of relief "it must have been very humid undercover

 

I've just notice that you were asking about my tortoise Pete, "Horris" isn't real but has always been a feature in any story's I made-up at night time for my children and later grandchildren. We have had him for over 40 yrs and had great fun putting him on straw to hibernates under a holly bush during the winter.

 

He looks almost real in that picture,
