I have been growing Hibiscus rosa-sinensis for many, many years and have absolutly no problems with them.

However, last year I decided ti buy an Hibiscus syriacus First Editions® French Cabaret™ Purple. It budded up a few months ago and has done nothing since and the buds dried up. I kept it with my others in filtered sunlight and all were watered the same time.

There are no insects. This morning it was moved to a sunnier spot.

I also have a 30cm high one I did from seed (single, colour unknown but possibly Purple or Orange) which I would like to nuture to bloom.

    Thank you in advance.
Any thoughts on what I should do please?

    Does it look yellow?
They dont bud up here much before next month and they are running a bit late, like most things, this year.
I just wonder if, being a more seasonal type of plant rather than the tropical types you grow, it got itself out of season.

I'm assuming it lost its leaves last winter, I think they could well need a cool dormant period.

We have had yellow leaves. I got it in November from Italy without leaves ...

Strangely the seedling has not lost its leaves.

I thought maybe it is not liking our dry heat.

I can only really comment on growing them here and they leaf up about April /May time then flower after the days are getting shorter.
They may well need a resting period during winter, I think they come from the Eastern Med, at a guess, and I think it can get cold in winter in those parts.

Just out of interest I shredded a lot of prunings last winter and spread them as a mulch, this spring the whole area was like a carpet of seedlings.

Like Pete I thought that it came from the Eastern Med (what with syriacus in the name and all).
I had it in a couple of gardens in Essex and it was last into leaf and among the first to drop them.
Here in Devon I've had two and both have died, one last year from the drought and one some years ago, similar reason, different position. Will give it another go when I see one for sale.
Apparently it was collected from Syria and brought to Western Europe, hence syriacus. I would think it reached Syria along the Silk Route from China.
Apparently it's the national flower of South Korea.

Interesting Pete and Nigel. I remember lovely pictures of yours Pete.

We actually had three of them in Alabama at the back of the house We knew them as Rose off Sharon. They were taller than the gutters. We were only in that house for two years before moving to the UK. I never did anything with them. North Alabama, where we were in Huntsville was very hot in the Summers and very cold in the Winters with snow.

Perhaps I will let it be this year. Should I pick the dead buds off it?

Are the buds staying attached, does it look healthy.
I would have expected dead buds to have dropped off.

The shrub looks healthy. All the buds dried up and died when quite small but we always have debris so difficult to find.

          Have you got a picture?
I just get the impression that they will only flower once a season, so if the flower buds were aborted earlier, I think that could be that for this year.

The one I did from seed but still young seems to have larger leaves ...

First one appears a bit short on foliage to me, I think it might be either dry or hungry or both. This is one of mine just budding up.

All were watered daily in the super hot spell. I never feed anything but maybe I will give it a boost later.

I am jealous. Wish I could put mine in the ground ... but there is seriously nowhere as we are on rock which is why we have all the patios and pots.
