Does this apply to main roads?
Oh ok its just the 30s that are going to 20s, but they keep lowering the 40s to 30s around here, then you get them moaning about pollution.
Driving in second or third gear is always going to be a dirty way of driving.

There are 20mph limits in the surrounding villages here and they reduced Beauly town to 20mph at the beginning of the summer.

I actually think it's dangerous. I've found driving so slowly creates distraction through boredom. Something I don't like to admit but I'm sure I'm not the only one.

The end of my road is 20mph , but only until you are passed the local shops, it then goes back to 30mph.
Nobody takes any notice of it anyway, its not a place you would speed, unless you are a boy racer, and they still do it anyway.
Mind you, we have some really bad bone shaking, suspension ruining speeed humps everywhere.
But the potholes are probably the most speed restrictive invention they have ever come up with.

Years ago the City of London were going to lower their speed limit to 20mph (actually TFL did it on some roads). The main comment they got from the people that were using the roads was that they would love to be able to get up to 20mph during the daytime. :)

TFL are saying that dropping it to 20mph has led to a 25% drop in collisions and serious injuries. If you believe that....... :rolleyespink: Of course, if they dropped the speed limit to zero there would be no accidents at all. :heehee:

Our lane is 60mph but you wouldn't be able to get to that speed, even 30 is to fast here as it's a single track country lane with blind bends but tis fun watching the fast drivers meeting vehicles coming the other way and have to try out the brakes  have cctv covering a blind bend just in case of a bad accident, hopefully they won't meet this vehicle which driver is allways on the phone, and sometime towing an ex artic trailer which has no brakes and fully loaded :help:

There's a common misconceptions about speed limits especially on country roads. The national speed limit is often used when nobody bothered to set a specific limit. It means you can't get done for the specific offence of speeding, but can still get done under the offence of driving without due care and attention. So if someone does 59mph and has an accident, they won't get done for speeding but can still get done under other laws if the court rules they were driving too fast for the conditions.

Don't know about other places but nearly every country lane and half the main roads have got road closed signs on them.
You can't go anywhere without detours that just kind of peter out and leave you totally lost unless you know the area.
How ever minor the work they are doing they just close the road.

I wouldn't mind so much if they were repairing them, but mostly they are just creating the next generation of potholes.

RAC very poor performance - so far.

A friend was here yesterday and when he went to leave at 7p.m. he couldn't turn the key in the ignition. Apparently, it's an electronic key that the car's computer reads and if it is OK it lets him turn the key. He tried a number of things but eventually called the RAC sometime before 8 p.m. They turned up about 90 minutes later, tried a number of things but eventually gave up and called for their breakdown vehicle to pick our friend and his car up and take him home.

At 10p.m. he received a text saying they would pick him up at 2.15 a.m. :yikes: He's 85! So he phoned them and asked for it to be sooner and they said they would call him within 20 minutes to get a more accurate time. 30 minutes later he called them again as he didn't get a call and they said they would come for the car between 7 a.m. and midday  So I had to take him home, an hour away.

They said they would call about an hour before they would be coming

I'll change their performance rating when they eventually do the job but can only guess it will get worse.

Part of the problem with these breakdown services is that they don't actually put you in a queue.
They prioritise certain jobs for various reasons, so unless you are in imminent danger they put you on the back burner.

And so it should be. A young mum with kids on the hard shoulder of the M6 must take priority over someone broken down outside a friend's house.

Now they have a problem of how to get it out of the driveway. They don't know how to get it into neutral (electric key and automatic car - and they don't know whether the key or the car have a working battery). Without it being in neutral they can't turn the wheels.

EDIT:- he found the release to put it in neutral. Lifted out the little tray that holds coins etc. and there was a hole underneath where he could put in a finger and release the gears.

Our driveway is narrow and their vehicle is wide and long. The road is not very wide so reversing in will be difficult. Then he will have to manouevre the car as the driveway is not straight.

He did a brilliant job but it took him half an hour. Reversing in took quite a bit with trying to avoid hitting the telephone pole across the road whilst also trying to avoid our flower beds. Wiggling the car (technical term) to load it took quite a few wiggles and then getting out of the driveway without ending up in the ditch took a five point turn which he did very smoothly.

It wasn't the RAC but a local garage that did it. :blue thumb:

Local independent garages are the unsung heroes of the motoring world. They often know exactly what they're doing, or if it's something they've never encountered before, they figure it out. And when they're done all that they usually come up with a price that's a fraction of what the big chains would charge.

I still need to be convinced that the business model of the RAC and AA can beat that of the likes of Green Flag. GF may not have guys in neat uniforms with clean liveried vans - but they turn up quickly. Where ever you break down - there is local garage that have signed up to Green Flag and they are ready to rock and roll.

Been with GF forever - they have never let me down.
