You could start with Winter Density lettuce, Paris White lisbon (spring) onion, and Aqua watercress now(sow in next 4 weeks) in deep trays* or modules to replace your tomatoes in 8-10 weeks time. These may give you a crop in Nov and/ or January, with a start to the Spring as well.
*Good are the blue mesh basket type trays which mushrooms are shipped. If you've a market veg stall, just ask them-theyll be glad to give them away!

Wow....so glad to see that runners have arrived..
But , due to low bee population , am I right in thinking that there will be few around in the Supermarkets ?

Lots of bees here. Commercial growers get bee keepers to bring hives close to their crops or grow many of the French x Runner bean crosses that are self fertile.

I don't grow runner I prefer Frenchies and Broad beans, neither of which look great, pollination looks ok, just poor plants from old seed I think.

I grow Sweetcorn under glass as I am quite a long way north, this years Earliebird, seem to be doing well, flower pollen heads appearing and signs of cobs, now this good for up here, even the left over plants outside look like they might try producing too, that will be only the second time in 20 years if the work.

I can remember growing sweetcorn back in late 70s early 80s and it was really late forming cobs, pretty hit and miss really.
They seem to be breeding faster maturing ones all the time these days, or maybe I've got better at growing it.:roflol:
Mine is now showing silks and shedding pollen on the allotment, only planted as small plants in early June.

Just back from picking broad beans, latterly in the gloom. There won't be many more. A mahoosive sack of them which I moved carefully to avoid crushing the ones at the bttom.Tomorrow will have to spend some time podding them all (or the big ones, anyway).

                          Runner beans.
I like to grow them where I can as we enjoy them so much ,and they just love the rain.

                              Nice harvest there JWK

The cabbage I sowed in February was unfortunately a late one and is only now forming heads. I have eaten two but the other six or so have got a lot of caterpillars in them and will be going to the compost heap. Next year I'll be sure to sow an early variety! I

I've got a lot more winter veg in the ground now than I usually do, about 2x the number of sprouts, more psb and white sprouting too, never grown that before. Also have swede, winter cabbage, romanesco, parsnips.

My celeriac is variable, some the size of golfballs still, others almost look ready. But I'll leave them until we get some frosts. Got loads of corn cobs forming, the squash looks a bit underwhelming, beans finally coming ready, cucumbers a no show but they were in very poor positions. Summer lettuce was decimated by slugs and I planted a lot of Chinese greens but they have also been chomped. Now planning what to sow for the greenhouses over winter
