My phone gave me a notification at work today. A yellow weather warning for rain apparently.

Yes it was raining. I live in England. I have lived in England all my life so far. I am familiar with rain. I know it makes you wet if you go out in it. And I know it makes puddles on the roads. But apparently now I need to be told it's a yellow weather warning level event. I have no idea how I've survived this long without yellow weather warnings. It's a miracle.

We don't get much in the way of wet yellow weather warnings but still get the yellow puddles when our friend's dog comes around.

Another good one is naming what were perfectly ordinary events. The bit of a breeze that is currently refreshing the north and west of France is Patricia. Why??? Is it just to give the météorologists something to do?

I think we were feeling left out with all those hurricanes that we hear about these days, all with nice names, we had to start doing the same thing with our depressions.

Every thing about the weather gets hyped up these days just to reinforce that it's all part of climate change, if you give it a name it sticks in people's minds that something strange is going on.

Someone said once we don't have a climate in Britain, we only have weather.
That's my opt out regarding climate change.

The bank of England has raised interest rates again. Apparently to tackle inflation.

Today, while doing my monthly review of my financial position, a thought occurred to me. My savings are basically rotting. Despite the marginally increased savings interest rate it is still less than inflation. I reckon in real terms I reckon I'm losing upwards of 6% every year.

Meanwhile, anyone who has to remortgage is getting severely penalised. Mortgage rates increase, house prices decrease, loan to value is less favourable, so rates offered are less favourable.

                    How does this tackle inflation?

I'm now thinking now is the time to start spending my savings, which will increase demand and increase inflation.

I'm not an economist, but there must be a better way.

And yet the the banks are doing very well from all this in profits.

They did say that Natwest profits for 3 months is 3 times the profits of British gas was in 6 months.
But BG got the hammering in the media.

As for savings mine have been rotting for the last 20 yrs with close to zero interest rates.

I've just had a quick look at Nationwide (others are available) and you can, apparently, get 5.5% for a one year fixed rate bond. I haven't checked the details.

Just a helpful note for if you get annoyed, like I do, at trying to phone and complain to supermarkets - and, probably, other companies.

I wanted to complain about some 'fresh' fruit I bought in the supermarket, looked up their number and phoned. The first thing they said was they are likely to be too busy to answer the phones but if you need to talk about an online delivery or your order, press 1.

There were four other options. None of them suited what I wanted and so I pressed one of them but eventually got routed back to 'go online'.

So I pressed no 5 (if you are a member of staff and are phoning in sick') and got through to a person. I was then able to complain and get it sorted. I reckon I got through to someone in their office that doesn't specifically deal with staff phoning in sick and just told them my complaint (not a sock complaint :heehee:) and they didn't question why I had come through on that line.

Good luck if you try it. :) You can't lose anything by it. :roflol:

If I had savings that I was confident I could leave for a good few years, I wouldn't keep them in a bank or building society. I'd have them in a stocks and shares ISA instead. In fact that's where a significant chunk of my savings live, but I keep most in the building society as an emergency fund, leaving my stocks and shares to do their thing over a longer term.

Historically, long term trend in the stock market has consistently beat inflation, but it's much more volatile and can see sudden drops in double digit percentages, so it's not the place to keep money if you might need it at short notice. That's why I do a bit of conventional banking, and a bit of stocks and shares.
