Spent a couple of hours in the polytunnel this a.m.....a good soaking for the poor, dehydrated plants that OH has been 'taking care of', hoed off the weeds and picked aubergines, peppers, toms, cucs, chillies, gherkins and courgettes. Slight distraction at lunchtime as OH found a dog in distress in the ditch that borders our farmer neighbour's field. Turned out to be another neighbour's elderly hunting dog who had had a stroke according to our saint of a vet who took him into the surgery. Planted a load of surplus Amaryllis bulbs. The rest of the day was devoted to clearing up the piles of prunings and weeds and battening down the hatches ready for tonight's forecast storm.

On the ladder today. Spent a day cutting my ivy going over the high wall to neighbouring property, then tearing away bindweed growing from another property onto my fence and my cherry laurels. Then finally gave my cherry laurels a haircut. Omg... I had to stand on an upper step of the ladder, getting myself in between dense foliage to cut upper branches. Even fox gave me a surprised look.

It's been raining so only watered the hanging baskets because the rain doesn't get to them.

Had someone round to get rid of a wasp nest behind our ivy on our next door neighbours garage. It must have been there a long time as it measured 3ft W x 1ft H x 6 inches thick. My son was weeding the flowers and got stung on his scalp a couple of days ago and we though it was just a one off, until my husband was opening the shed door today and was lucky in not being stung himself. Yesterday was a long day in the hot and sunny garden and hat to wear a hat, which I hate doing .

As usual at this time of year I started my day out there about 7 a.m. with almost an hour of picking beans. Then picked the last of our golden plums and chatted to the wasps whilst I did so. They have had a nest in the ground beneath the plum tree for at least forty years and we're on chatting and buzzing terms. :)

Then I went on to picking masses of blackberries, some courgettes and tomatoes. I had to get Mrs Shiney to pick up the windfall apples (too much bending for me ) so that I could mow.

Spent two hours mowing and 45 minutes trimming edges. Then dug out a large Euphorbia and seven boxes of Jerusalem sage ready for taking to the charity garden centre tomorrow. I'm sure Mrs Shiney will have more plants for me to dig out and add to the others. We do regular runs during Spring and Summer to supply them with lots of surplus plants - everything seems to grow like mad and spread all over the place. We don't have to do any potting up for them but just dig things out (with accompanying weeds) and they sort them, split them and weed them before potting for sale.

I take potted up and grown on plants for sale almost every week to my Tuesday afternoon bridge club, together with the beans, and the proceeds all go to the charity we have been supporting for years.

This week it is variegated Forsythia. Last week it was summer flowering variegated Jasmine and the week before it was Hydrangea Annabelle. It also gets some of the club members there early (as it is on a first come, first served basis) and then they help set the hall up. I'm taking a bucket of windfall apples as well for them to help themselves.

Just going out to pick more beans. :phew: :heehee:

Not much to do out there, apart from a bit of dead heading and pulling out the odd weed when one gets spotted. Picked more Plums and Tomatoes yesterday.

Yesterday I gave my garden-helping lady a box full of cuttings and small rooted plants. She did a lot of cutting back of overgrown things (Virginia creeper and a big Fuchsia etc) and helped me sort out my pottery-making shed ... tidying it and rearranging the shelving etc.

Today someone is coming to see my garden with a view to putting decking down the bottom, two gates, and making a few steps for me to go into the perspex shelter on the south side of my old garage, and re-doing the path.

My experience with decking is not good. I found it got very slippery (algae build up) and too much maintenance.

Here also, but the decking I'm going to have will be the same as the one put on my patio last year, made from some reconstituted stuff. It's brilliant - no slipping and guaranteed to last at least 30 years. I will be long gone by then ...
It costs more, but worth it.

I've walked on boardwalks, in the Lake District, that have been made of reconstituted plastic and they certainly seem to last well and are non-slip. :blue thumb:
